IRVINE, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Dec. 1, 2004 -- Blizzard's Newest Title Becomes North America's Fastest-Selling PC Game Ever, with Record Number of Accounts Created and Concurrent Players in First 24 Hours

Blizzard Entertainment(R) today confirmed that World of Warcraft(R) has broken day-one sales records in North America, making it the most successful PC game launch ever. World of Warcraft, the company's subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), sold through to over 240,000 customers at retailers in North America on Tuesday, November 23, selling more in its first 24 hours than any other PC game in history.(a)

In addition to shattering sales records, World of Warcraft also broke peak concurrency and account creation records for a MMORPG. Within the first day, over 200,000 players created World of Warcraft accounts. By 5:00 p.m. PST, over 100,000 were playing the game concurrently. These two record-breaking numbers made World of Warcraft the fastest-growing MMORPG in history. Within a single day, all original 40+ World of Warcraft servers were filled to capacity, and by the end of the Thanksgiving weekend, more than 40 additional servers were deployed to meet the rapidly growing player base, as the number of new accounts and concurrent users continued to grow.

"We were all extremely pleased with the success of World of Warcraft on its first day of launch," said Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard Entertainment. "Once we saw the numbers for the first day, we knew that we had to immediately increase capacity to accommodate the huge numbers of players joining our game. We're glad so many people are enjoying World of Warcraft, and we are dedicated to supporting a fun and smooth game experience for everyone."

Retailers across North America reported that the World of Warcraft launch was unequivocally their biggest day-one sales in PC gaming history. Leading industry retailers, such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, EB, and GameStop, all reported that hundreds of their stores sold out of World of Warcraft within the first day.

"World of Warcraft has once again shown that Blizzard consistently delivers the best games in the industry," said Robert McKenzie, vice president of merchandising at GameStop. "It sold better than any other PC game this year -- in fact, World of Warcraft enjoyed the best day-one sell-through GameStop has ever seen on a PC title!"

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, players continued to buy World of Warcraft in record numbers, with a total of over 350,000(a) copies of the game selling through. Blizzard Entertainment and its retail partners expect the remaining supplies of World of Warcraft to sell out soon. Blizzard is currently evaluating its ability to ship additional games to retailers, given the unexpectedly high demand on the servers. The company continues to increase server capacity to accommodate the growing number of players connecting to the game. As the additional servers are brought online and proven stable, additional copies of World of Warcraft will be made available at retail. Blizzard will announce the availability of those additional games as soon as they are on shelves.

WoW is easy play, EQII is more in depth play.

Which do you think is gonna sell more copies?

I played the WoW beta and I am playing EQII.

EQII doesn't have many bugs, and the most annoying that I DID know of, dissappearing NPC's is fixed.

WoW is a decent game, its just less comlicated then EQII.

WoW has 3 things over EQII.

Crafting system (EQII has a seriously conveluted system)

PvP (I like PvP but its not a make or break situation for me.)

Warcraft Setting.

EQII Has three things over WoW

Graphics (I like EQII's over WoW when it's all said and done)

Good to see.

The difference between WoW and EQII is that EQII feels like work. With WoW, I'm actually enjoying myself.

You can have all the deep gameplay mechanics you want, but if its not fun to play, it dosen't mean a thing. Besides, WoW can start implementing deep systems once the server issues are worked out.

I played WoW at my uncle's house the other night using my friend, kyle's account. He's a Warlock, human. It's sick. One of the most fun games I've ever played over teh interweb. I mean, it was just amazing how much there was to do ALL the time. Always little fights and little tasks to perform. You always feel like you're playing the game, not walking around doing nothing and just looking at stuff. It's great. And, as far as easy is concerned: i wouldn't say EASY per se, i'd use the term Accessible. it's more Accessible.

I more or less agree with Ctrl+Alt+Del's (http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/index.php) view:

I was in the beta for Everquest 2. It sucked. I absolutely fucking hated the shit out of that game, and I removed it's essence from my hard drive as fast as I could. It had some interesting ideas, but anything I found acceptable about the game was far, far outweighed by the stuff that annoyed the hell out of me.

The game was visually ugly. In their attempt at acheiving "next generation, CGI quality graphics", they gave everything that "plastic look", with horrible textures, and then wrapped it all around some of the clunkiest, most unnatural animations I've seen. And then they threw in a horrible polygon draw system for good measure.

The quest system may be wonderful, there may be top notch trade skills, but I'm not going to spend hundreds of hours staring at an ugly piece of junk just to experience it.

Everyone knows that I was not (am not) a real RPG player. But WoW makes it fun, I've been having a great time gaming with my team in WoW, every day is fun and the questing never gets old. I am not surprised about the launch really, I was in line at 12am on that Tuesday and there were about 40 other people there.. hell they only let us buy one copy each.

Overall considering the influx, the server issues have been fairly minimal. Other than the few servers that were pounded into the ground on day one and had to be shutdown for a few days, things have been fairly smooth.

Come on in trig, play with me and Jenny on Laughing Skull :p

EQII for me is like trying to enjoy yourself while being anally raped by five giant spiked dicks.

Why the hell would you want a game with so much micro-management that half your time is spent on trying to get the more complicated system to work correctly? As far as I'm concerned I can see myself playing WoW for years because quite frankly it's more enjoyable then what I played in EQII.

With the promises Blizzard gives the players the game can only get better and better, and you know they will deliver unlike some other company who brought us the bug and shit filled SW:G, the game that had potential PS and last but not least EQ whose bugs were fixed by releasing new expansions. Last I checked SOE was still promising to fix bugs on PS that they had on release not counting that they pulled an EQ and release Core Combat before these bugs were fixed. So tell me! Who should I trust to give me a better gaming experience? The game that is unfriendly for a casual gamers that requires a PHD in physics to operate or the casual gamer friendly that's much less complicated without being simple?

Fact is WoW so much better then EQII and the sales proved it.

Quit trying to defend the measily game Mr. Vic  ;).

Here is my WoW experience (beta):

1. Create Troll Hunter.

2. Kill stuff for a reward of crappy items I could have afforded normally, i.e "Torn Cloak made in Taiwan. +0 to everything. Does not show up on character."

3. Get bored, find a path out of Valley of Trials. Take it.

4. Fall into huge ocean and get eaten by a sea monster.

5. Do the whole ghost thing and run back to my body.

6. The only way out is through a river. Infested with crocodiles. I quit after I was advancing only a few dozen meters every life, like WWI.

MrVicchio

I keep seeing this in forums and game reviews. Can you explain this Vic?

SURE.

Okay first thing is first, I was a big EQII Fan, till I played the game.

There are LOTS of things in the EQII mechanics that make it deeper, the quest system as a whole, the stories and especially the Betrayal Quest (which I have done TYVFM)... I mean hearing Christopher Lee call for your execution.. how cool can you get?

The crafting ssytem is inheriently deeper. It takes SERIOUS dedication, friends, guildmates and tons of patience to advance in the artisan lines. You cannot be "just a weaponsmith" and expect to use that as solo time. It ain't gonna happen. Its also hosed beyond compare , but the actual amount of craftable items and the lengths to ACHIEVE said crafting...

Comming up on Holly Windstalkers grave out in Qeynos Hills... I didn't knwo whether to Piss on it for her killing my EQI character several times, or be awed by that little touch...

All that being said, it took me 3 days of hard WoW play with Dedenimuls to realize the Truth about EQII and WoW.

I could talk about the broke ass crafting/selling system in EQII (relying on others to even do lvl 10 stuff was GARBAGE, or the fact you have to stay IN YOUR ROOM to sell... BAH!)

I could go into the detail of the EQII graphics Vs the WoW graphics... but that leads to an artistic sense debate as well as a "are the graphics WORTH the high price of admission?" debate.

Thats all BS, you name ANYTHING ABOUT WoW or EQII and I can simplify the Truth for you.

Here is the Truth:

WoW is a Casual Gamers MMO done near flawlessly. Like a great PG movie, fun for the kids, but fun for the adults as well.

EQII is a Hard Core gamers game. The advantages of being in a large guild, having multiple accounts and computers running and the slower pace of advancement leaves the player base for EQII inheriently smaller.
