One of the most fun things you can do in EVE Online is engage in a gigantic alliance vs alliance fleet battle of Battleships slugging it out for supremacy of space. EVE Online recently upgraded their massive server cluster to some pretty serious yarrrrrware *thats a nick name* and tested it in a seprate server shard which they mirrored from the real EVE Shard. They then took all the safe space and turned it to lawless 0.0 space. The result? A normaly peacefull empire area guarded by cops and naval forces turned into a massive FFA of fleets pounding eachother into dust. A member of my corp took some Screenshots of the battles as they unfolded. I was lucky enough to be the active Fleet Commander during this. It was the most fun I have ever had in any game.

forgot all the links in the tags there buddy.

Was good fun, hammering the test server. It's made out of 70 of these (http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/opteron/ls20/index.html) for the world(keeping track of people and space ect.)and a couple of these (http://www.superssd.com/products/ramsan-400/) for the database.

It kicks any other single shard's game server ass by a long shot I imagine. And is one of the reasons CCP is the best MMO developer/producer ever.

Yea, but it should be common knowledge in the event that it's a setup that works really well. SOE and Blizzard can keep their secrets. :D

Oh my god If a 56ker happened on this thread the modem would have just commited suicide, with a dull spoon.

CCP even shared how thier servers are set up. How the load ballencers, well, ballance things where the bottlenecks lie ect.

Honestly why keep it a secret? It's not like it prevents hackers(ps, eq, wow have all had them) It tells the comunity that they're serious about fixing lag issues. It build trust, it puts the compay in a place that makes people like me say they're awesome.

Heh, my career sorta went like this.. (or still is)

1. We went to war with teddies, kicked their ass
2. We got pwned by an merc alliance
3. Floated around in Emp space in a Dest
4. Shot some pirates
5. Floated in Emp space some more
6. Trained about 4.4mill skill points
7. Sit in some Jita Space station for the last month

Grant it, 3 - 7 is largely my fault.. But with that one damed bug it makes it hard to go anywhere to long.

While it's all :drama: and I'm a :nodrama: kind of guy but I'm sorry Peace, your not the victim you make it sound like.

You wern't made an FC you self-appointed yourself to FC. It gave you a bit of an inflated ego, and that rubbed alot of people the wrong way(that's why most DDC leadership hates you btw. partly seen on sunday with the DDC fleet).

Me, I can easily put up with your character, but quite a few other's can't. That's why you had issues with solst leadership, they're are very easy going, you are not. They play the game "Hurray this is fun!", you play the game "THIS IS FUN PUCK-ASS-MOTHERFUCKER".

but let see, me
Joined XETIC(before the PSDU/Sharks war)
Made some money
Moved to impass when ASCN split from Xetic
killed people up north
had to fall out of game for a few months
back now(hopefully)killing more people up north.
Trying to become a merc with a few others in the near future.

Because it's alot of work to perfect these things, giving it away gives away your secrets thus another company can come along and possibly steal said ideas to build an even better server cluster. It's just common business sense hehe - it's like turning over the atom bomb plans to Japan back in the day

Honestly CCP is the kind of company that would love to share what works well.

Espeicaly if a company wants to sink that kind of money into a MMO of the same calibur.

Rob, frankly I dont care what ya say... I started leading gangs alot. I became recognized as a FC. It didnt rub anyone the wrong way except possibly you and everay. Infact I havnt said one thing on the forums suggesting that I have large ego because of being a FC. You wanna talk about that Everay did the same thing when yall joined xetic. He came prancin into the room and said he was an FC b.c he led a gang of 10 people for an hour. Ive led northern raids, PF-346 raids, and home defence. I say im an FC because I steped up to the plate like cyvok asked people to. You gonna call me a liar or say im using it to inflate my ego? Screw you too. Im doing what comes natural to me. Being a leader. DDC does not hate me, I talk to them alot. CEO Pyrex and I were talkin for a while after the battle on sunday. Nothing went wrong on sunday sept a little communications break down. I didnt make my self to be a victim. I disagreed with what Cyvok did, he basicly said "your on thin ice." and cordy said "Nah Ill boot him." As for the rest of DDC leadership hating me... they hate ANYONE who takes a leadership position b/c they think they should be kings of all. And FYI EOG is a laid back corp, and I fit right in. Lofty goals and a spirit to achive them. I didnt fit in SOLST b/c Solst was like "Eh, its just a game." EOG is like "Its a game where you can be someone!" and I want to be someone. I am quickly climbing up the ladder.

P.S. if ya wanna continue the convo, we can take it to the IG PSU chan

P.S.S. I have an ego. So does MT... so does half the leaders of the alliance... I really dont care if they dont like me. I know ALOT of general ASCN members who do. Cyvok likes me. Extreme my CEO likes me. My new corp mates like me. Thats all that matter.

CCP advertises how thier servers are set up partly because they really like to show off how dedicated they are. And, they really are. When people complained about database lag when moving items and such, they spent who knows how much money on solid-state high-speed drives. When people complained about lag in space they bought 70 of these IBM servers with 64-bit AMD processors, and upgraded everything today. All patches and expansions are free, and when the game devs go to fan faires they make a point to get falling-down drunk for their fans and give stuff away. EVE Online even has it's own quarterly magazine now, "EVE-O".

All in all, I've gotta say, CCP is the coolest damn game company ever. The best part is they are their own publisher, there is nobody telling them what to do but the game developers themselves. The game has a pretty good player base right now (over 100,000) and while it's not near WoW proportions by a long shot, they don't need to deal with a publisher pocketing most of the profits.

As for EVE being complicated, that's probably it's main selling point. This game is NOT your kiddie MMO. It tends to attract older, more mature players because of this fact, and in my experience has a more mature community than most. The game doesn't have a clear cut path, it is what you make it. It's a totally freestyle game and thus is pretty amazing as a result. The level of politics and economics and tactics you can get involved in within EVE is mind-staggering. It's also absolutely massive, with at least a thousand unique solar systems forming an actual galaxy that is simply huge.

The game also carries with it a higher level of risk than most other MMOs. While you can insure your ships, the more expensive / better ones tend to have less payout / cost more to insure. It's possible to lose a ship that you spent a week working on building in a matter of seconds in PvP, and while it seems like this would make the game stressful (and perhaps, sometimes it is a bit nerve-wracking) it means that people in general play the game a lot more cautiously and smarter than you'll see in other MMOs, emphasizing the importance of using your head in EVE. The game can be unforgiving at times, and CCP allows crime to be part of that universe. So if you want to be a pirate and blow people away, or even try to be a thief and/or scammer, it's all allowed. This doesn't make EVE a griefers paradise however, as the ability to declare war on enemies, set bounties on enemies, have revenge kill rights contracts, and the protection of NPC police provides players with the ability to protect themselves.

Like I said in another thread, EVE is sorta like chess. A tricky game to play, and certainly not a quick casual game you can sit down and play in a couple minutes, but the satisfaction you get when you achieve a goal (or just blast some guy's battleship into dust) is pretty intense. PvP in EVE is more exciting than a FPS in the way it gets my blood pumping. Perhaps it's the risk involved, the fast pace of most combat scenarios, or seeing your hard work pay off when you succeed that makes it so fun.

Lastly (and yeah, I know I'm making this into a book), it's definately a social game. Half of EVE is finding friends and getting into a good corp that can help support you. It can make or break the game for a new player if he doesn't find a group that is fun and supportive. Playing solo isn't really all that fun IMO, the game is very much based around group play. It integrates it into the game very well, with clans known as "corporations" and essentially being a business in the EVE universe. Each corporation tends to have it's own goal for making cash and gaining its members power and infamy. Whether it's hiring out as mercenaries in wars between other corporations, pirating other players, building weapons and ships, running missions or claiming vast stretches of contested space, you pretty much have your choice.

It's a damn good game. :D

EDIT- and Rob, Peace isn't just blowing it out his ass. He is an official Fleet Commander of the Eye of God Navy, with myself being a Lieutenant Commander. We've literally got billions in funding. When both of us get into Carriers next month, the corp will be providing us with everything we need, from the expensive skills to the ships and fighters themselves, for free. In return we, and our couple-dozen Navy members, have pledged to make EOG an important part of the ASCN combat fleet. With our own outpost being put up soon (along with a second shortly after that) EOG and ASCN will be developing additional assets that will need protection by a dedicated combat force, not just a bunch of people who slap heavy launchers onto their ospreys when word goes out that an invasion force is incoming.

I'm not rippin on ya man, but the elitist attitude that I've been seeing from you and certain other PSU members who started playing EVE really killed some of the respect I've had for you folks. It's easy to forget who taught you how to play from the seat of his Tech 2 frigate, then kill a couple people in PvP and turn around and tell said person that you know more about the game than he does. Frankly, it was offensive to those of us who brought you guys into the game, and has resulted in some bad blood, and your constant critque does little to improve things.

If you don't think we have the experience you do, fine, you're entitled to that opinion, but please keep it to yourself. I know Peace's bragging bothers you, but the rest of us who play alongside him have learned to accept his ego as part of his personality, and also realize that he DOES have some bragging rights. Everyone has their own bragging rights to be honest, and it really doesn't need to end up being a pissing contest. Drama is stupid. If you can't get along with us, play the game your way and we'll play it ours, it's as simple as that.

/me was in Ikuchi too. 2 consecutive days. Although the lag got me the mast evening, it was still great fun.

I only have 6,5m sp, but still made some nice kills.
On the second evening we formed a gang to to remove the station gankers, which worked to some extent.

After that we just started to gank everything too.

Lag was horrible the last time I warped to station. Took forever to load, and I was in my pod when I could finally see something.
That might be due to the massive amounts of cans and drones around, and a lack of RAM on my machine.

http://users.pandora.be/yve/Crazy1.png

And that was just the first day, when the serious fighting still had to start.
The second time was way worse, over 120 people in system at some point, with most of them at that station.

.... then your in. The titan ship has the undenably most intense firepower of anything ever imagined in the eve universe. Capable of unleashing a super weapon that can destroy everything withing 200km (very large area) it is arguebly the most influencial ship in the game to own. No one has any yet.. it takes almost 2 years to fly them. But when you can... its flown by not just you, but by an alliance. Whome ever wins the titan race in eve will gain unparralleled military might, and political power. And my money is on ASCN. We have everything we need, just waiting for a few skill points to finish for the builders to build it...

P.S. It takes a LONG time to train for this ship... but its worth it... and along the way you do learn other ships. They are just prereqs... I strongly suggest anyone who wants a new game to play to try EVE. Having a friend in the biggest alliance in the game isnt a bad thing either.

btw Elec, that comment to rob... QFT man... TY for backing me up a bit. But... did you just say I have bragging rights??? This is a first! /me straps on his anti armageddon suit (no not the ship)

Realy you don't buy the game so much as you buy an account, you can DL the client whenever, and there's no key or anything to activate.

When you pay the $20 for setup you also get a month of game time, so you essentialy buy the game for $5. All content after that is included in the monthly fee, and major content patches/expantions (Exodus, Cold war, Red moon rising, etc.) come out every so often, roughly twice yearly.

They just upgraded the server to that 64bit opteron wtf-pwnage server, known affectionaly as "Yaaaaardware" and eve-online.com is still down, when it get's back up I can get you guys buddy-trial thingies.

Peacemaker

OMA. TBH its just the opposite. The games time based skill training is active when your logged off. You could do the 14 day trial, find the longest skill available to train (Probably frigate level 5) and train it on the last day of trial. Subscribe to the game with your trail account 30 days later and bam. You have trained one of the lower advanced skills before anyone else that started playing has. Alot of the time Ill let one of my acounts go inactive training a mega skill. And TBH if your talkin about PVP the #1 most valuble players in PVP are tacklers, newbies in frigs flying around a battleships slow tracking guns, keeping it from warping.

Electrofreak
2006-02-26, 01:10 AM
yeah EVE is a real good game for those of us with jobs to play... the skill trains when you're offline so your character progression is mostly time based. Since it only takes a couple weeks to fly a single type of ship in PVP well, it's not hard to become a good PVPer even shortly after starting to play the game. It's also easy to become an asset to a group by being a tackler or an electronics warfare platform even only a few days into the game. It's not all about having huge amounts of firepower or every skill in combat to Level 5.

Peacemaker
2006-02-26, 09:35 AM
Other than having the basic support skills up the best part about eve is that you can specalize in one type of combat and do better at it than a 2 or 3 year old char could... Like if you spent 3 months training up Navigation skills, rocket skills, and caldari frigate 5, you would have better interceptor skills than me... thats cause I didnt specalise in them, I just trained enough to fly them relativly well in combat, while a spec person could fly them to the max ofthe ships abilities. Specialisation is the key.

Hamma
2006-02-26, 10:12 AM

A trucker is doing one of a number of things, moving manufactured stuff around to sell or stage in a certian system(ships/mods, player made stuff), moving ore for refine, moving Minerals to sell or to a factory, doing courier missions, or doing trade routes.

Trade routes: you buy a bunch of stuff from NPC's then you fly the stuff to another location and hopefully sell it for a higher price, but other factors affect the market.

Electrofreak
2006-02-26, 01:23 PM
Hauler pilots usually just move ore or trade commodities. Some of the richer ones will actually move ships and items for profit, sometimes just by buying low somewhere and selling high somewhere else. Those who really get their skills up will buy a freighter, which has the capacity of dozens of haulers, and these often get paid by clients (usually manufacturers) who actually hire them and pay upwards of a million a jump to move a bulk of items.

Sometimes haulers need to move materials through dangerous space for their client, and sometimes will have several others escort them or use a blockade runner hauler to try to make it through alive. This obviously costs even more money. Because of this, more and more manufacturers are training to be haulers themselves, which is making it a harder industry to do as a sole means of income. Most haulers are becoming manufacturers or are PVP players who use their hauling abilities to make money to fund their addiction for losing ships.

The complexity in this game is crazy I'm tellin yah :p

(Oh and a word of advice... don't do player courier missions. They're rarely profitable and some of them are scams where they make you pay a collateral, then find you and kill you to collect it.)

Wow. Just wow.

Electro, his brother, Peacemaker, and me are all in the in-game alliance "Ascendant Frontier", we just has basicly the largest snowball fight ever. (CCP the game's creators released "snowball launchers", which fired snowballs at people and they exploded when they hit you, causing no damage, just cool effects, last christmas)

So to test the game's new servers, that CCP just got for the game, our alliance got everyone to log on, passed out the thousands of launchers and snowballs we had, and we wanted to test the new servers.

They work perfectly. We had 272 people logged on in the same spot and the only problem was client side lag, no problems fromt he server. We warped from a station to a gate at the same time (If you know how big a Battleship is, think of 250 of those in a tightly-packed circle) and we formed a circle in-warp and landed directly around the gate. bullseye.

I'll be spending the next hour trying to upload the pics I have. It was awesome.

Yea, the kesstrel. Thats a frig. Takes some skills to get 4 missle launchers to fit on it though.

The caracal is the cruiser version of the same ship.

The raven is the battleship version of the same ship.

Oh yea. A mother ship is a bigger carrier, nothing more nothing less. Me and electro will be piloting the same Mship. We will both have the skills for it and they are too expensive for two...

OMA pay attention, there is only one server :p

Race does not truley matter on the game, you can train any skill without penalty, just find one that you like the looks of, but fiddle with your character, you want the lowest charisma points possible, and the others need to be ballanced or higher in perception/willpower.

If want to do missles start as Caldari.
Hybrids(rail guns) go gallente
Beam go Amarr
Cannons go Minmatar

You aren't limited to any of those, but they will determin what you start with(traning another weapon type is like a a 15minute skill)

You can easily fit 4 rocket launchers on a kessy, you'll have more fun that way too.

If you have instas in either of those ships your invincible, unless you run into bubblecamps/interdictors.

Also, that's not the whole region of Syndicate, it's a 10/10 ranked complex someware in that region, isn't it?

I know the picture is from a deadspace, I've been there(that isn't to say that there isn't a system with the back ground). The Sansha's 10/10 has the same kind thing but in red with dust all over.

I've never seen a broken get like that outside of a complex either.

Wow. Smaug just logged on and claimed to have negotiated th end of a war that some how involved bob, Snigg, and the majority of the south in 3 hours. I called bullshit on him under the tense *you dont negotiate with bob*. He smiled and said he did. Then he said "I dont have to validate my self to you" and then logged off.... I find it hilarious... he thinks hes somekind of negotiator, or weapons dealer that is neutral to everyone in eve. Always told him thats not how eve works but... well... he keeps making stuff up about it being true.

About the screenshot:

Did a quick search of the forums, and found a thread which links to a video of a similar one, the Sanshas 10/10. (As mentioned by Rbstr, it's orange instead of blue.)

Would be great to take images from there for wallpaper :D

EDIT: Erm, might help a little to actually link the thread... Here (http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=295258&page=1) it is.

Hey there, not sure if i should have made a new thread for this but since is EVE thought i'd post it here

I did a 14 day trial of EVE a while back (just before the player owned space stations and mining barges came) and had a bit of fun, by the end i think i ended up with some frigate that looked like an upside-down Y and an Iteron III (sp?) ( i was Gallante btw)

So lately i've been thinking about doing another trial and maybe subbing this time but i would like to know whats the best way to have fun in EVE, by the end of my trial zapping a rock for an hour to fill the hull of my Iteron wasnt something i enjoyed too much.. but theres obviously people here that enjoy the game very much..

So, if i were to get another trial and/or subscribe.. whats the best way to get the most enjoyment out of EVE?

Thanks ^^

TresheR
2006-03-04, 05:58 AM
Hmm, that frigate was probably an imicus, one of the cheapest and weakest frigs in the Gallente arsenal. Unless you really want to mine, never ever come near it again. :p

But you have apparently missed the most fun thing to do in EVE, pvp. Get yourself a new trial, and go shoot something!

The best way to play eve is in a group hamma. Like Ive said before if you want to come out to 0.0 just ask. Theres alot more to do out there. Also we are going PVPing for the rest of the month on wensday so If ya wanna join in on that party. We will have to give you a crash corse on scrambling and all that fun stuff... maybe we can get you in a gryphon with ECM. Like weve said before the game is NOT a instant gratification game. It takes months to beable to fly a battleship profiecently and this is where I feel the game looses the most customers who are interested. But, after that inital period, you can make money your self. When that happens you start setting new goals for Skills, T2 ships for combat, Frieghters :) , Collecting rare ships like I do, making a personal fortune, being a builder, being a miner. That is when the game truly starts to shine.

Not half Bad for a week and a half. You need two very important skills though... both are under the engineering catagory, Energy Systems Operation and Energy Managment. One increases your Cap by 5% per level, the other increases recharge by 5%. I suggest you do the Cap increase one first as your not as worried about recharge in cruisers and stuff.... you just need more cap. After you get it to 3 or 4 take the recharge one to 3 or 4.

They really made dessis very good at what they do... and thats about it. Frial like ceptors, but very powerfull if you use them right, to do the right thing, at the right time, when your in the right place, and have exactaly 300 eggs in the cargo hold, and are sitting on a stool, and you ate chicken for dinner... you get the point.

Y'know... all I see when I look at those pics is empty space, one ship and a shitload of red and blue dots. Then again... I never really liked space sims. If it doesnt throw you out in the action and just shows you alot of empty space, ain't worth it in my book.

Get a frigate hehe - merlin for the win!

Rbstr
2006-03-09, 11:53 AM
hamma: Why do you like the merlin exactaly? Everyone loves the ship for some reason(including me). It's weird.

Also if you like the merlin, you may want to try out the Gallente Tristan, It has a hybrid turret Damage bonus, instead of a range bonus, It has one less med, but one more low.

It also goes 30m/s faster and has less mass so AB's and MWD have more effect.

Hamma
2006-03-09, 11:55 AM
No particular reason really - it's the first ship I got and I've loved it ever since. I tried out the others but prefer the Merlin - it has a nice mix of weaponry :D

Infernus
2006-03-09, 01:18 PM
The nice thing about the merlin is that it is a workable weapon's mix... most mixed weapon frigates are.

I can't think of a single mixed weapon cruiser or BS that could say that except the Tempest.

All of my ships on the other hand are rather one track minded.

T2 MegaPulse Laser Armageddon
T2 Tachyon Beam Laser Apocalypse

You wanna use missles or guns? You wanna fight or build? Depends on what you want to do.

Rbstr
2006-03-11, 10:08 AM
You've got a nice start to an offensive character IMO, I already told you some stuff last night. But an amendum:

After you are able to use the shield tank stuff, get a level or too in the gunneryskills. Not the ones that let you use turrets but stuff like motion prediction, controled bursts, ect.

Do the same for missile skills.

Also, pick a long term ship goal, Battleship, Battercruiser, inty, cruiser. And we can help you figure out what you need to pilot it effectivley.

Specialization in a certian ship type or race is the key to getting ahead in this game when your new, after you've got decent skills in one thing you can branch out a bit.
