I'm trying to get my iskies up in the trading side of EVE. However, I search the market for longer than I care to admit and rarely see big enough of a profit margin between buyers and sellers to make the long jumps worthwhile.
Am I missing something or am I just a greedy oaf?:D

Trading is difficult because people have it down to a science now. The get on right after DT and fill up a frieghter with the best stuff or the day.
I don't bother with it, but someone else might be able to let you in on some of the tricks of the trade.

The absolute best way to trade is probably to go with mineral trading. Let me explain.
People always need minerals. Minerals always sell, they're used for everything. They're equally needed all over space, and in some areas are in huge demand.
So, if you get good refining skills, do some homework, and start putting up buy orders for modules, and calculate the amount of minerals you get reprocessing them, and then resell them on the market especially in high-demand areas, you can make good isk. Using this method, shoot for a profit margin of about 10***37; or so, and you should do ok.
It's a lot of work, but it works!
One other option is to take things that are sold in large quantity in one area, ship it to another area where theres not enough supply, and sell for higher. Example. Buy Heat Sink IIs in Jita. Fly to a section of space where there aren't a lot of Heat Sink IIs on market, and sell them for higher. This can be tricky, a lot of other people do it, but if you can find a niche, you should have a fairly steady source of income.
Also, capitalize based upon the market and new features in the game. Due to exploration coming out, I easily made isk in empire with an alt building probes (though they're a bitch to get all the materials together for). You could buy rig parts and build rigs, or purchase rig parts and ship them to other parts of the galaxy where they don't often drop as salvage from the NPCs. This could be very profitable, but again you'd have to do a bit of research and homework. You can probably find the information you need on the www.eve-online.com forums.
