No PvP?
Its a dungeon crawler, you don't really play it for the PVP... Also they said it would be patched in at a later date anyway
Playing Diablo 3 for the PVP? LMAO
Diablo is all about dungeon crawling with your buddies for phat lewtz
God damn I remember when I found my first piece of the Bul Kathos set on my frenzy barb.... GLORIOUS
I'm royally pissed off at D3 for not letting Barbs dual wield two handed swords anymore. You don't remove key features like that, there's no point to it other than to piss off the people that enjoyed that playstyle :|

It's true you should not play Diablo for the PvP but it was a part of it.
They said they're working on it post release. But still I'm passing.

I might get it but I'm not into dungeon crawls. I liked D2 due to plot and that I could play as a necromancer. Though I'd rather have hacked gear as most of the fights to me were just muck I had to slog through for the next bit of content/discovery. Never really bothered with PvP or co-op but I did have two outfitmates who were really into it. I also really liked collecting sets for some reason. Probably has something to do with my completionist mindset.

For me, Diablo 2 was all about having fun with my friends. Played D2 with my neighbors a lot.
(than in 2004 I was told about EQ2, my first taste of MMO, and I seen what could be done when it is an MMO opposed to whatever Diablo2 was called, and never went back. PLUS Diablo is totally infested with SPAM BOTS AND HACKERS)
(it came out in 2000, was pretty young back than)
Kept in touch with them on facebook and plan to play a little D3.
so for me it's not so much as "YAY Diablo 3 is coming out!" as it is more like "YAY I can relive a part of my gaming history!"
Was a little peeved that there will be no LAN/single player this time around. Used to love playing my old copy of D2-LOD solo on my laptop if I had to leave town. but I guess now with smartphones I could tether and play anything
So I am a bit excited about D3 but it is not going to be my main game.
Plus I don't really trust Activision/blizzard to not totally bastardize the series.

I am a huge fan of the Diablo Series. I started playing it back when D1 first came out with my father and sister. D3 will be a must buy for me. Will all be playing it when where not playing PS2. lol.
My only annoyance is that they are releasing the game right in the middle of the frigging beta. ><

I can't tell if your disclaimer was also sarcasm.
Personally I have more interest in TL2 than D3, but I also have more interest in Grim Dawn than either of those. I loved Titan Quest, so I'm excited to see how GD turns out.
Haven't decided if I'm even going to bother with D3 yet, but playing around with the character planner has sure been fun.

Phantasy Star Online 2 is the same sort of concept as Diablo, and will be much better than D3 imo.
I pose this question to all: is the top-down, click-here-to-move, style of Diablo still relevant in today's gaming world? Is it still fun when considering what else is out there? Can it hold your interest? I want to know what you guys think.

Yes. Why wouldn't it? You could ask the same for driving games, first-person shooters or platform games.
So long as a genre keeps up with the times, there's no reason it should stop being fun. Hell, just look at Legend of Grimrock...That's a type of game that hasn't been seen for a long, long time, yet they're still fun if they're made to today's standards.

I wasn't excited for D3 at first. Diablo is always synonymous with repetition, grinding and more repetition. It's fun for awhile, but after so much time it finally starts to get dull.
However, after seeing a few gameplay videos, it could prove to be a nice distraction at least for awhile up until PS2 comes out. There's a few concerns I have about the game though.
1. The low level cap/longevity of the game.
Max level is only 60 in the game, which seems low compared to the previous 99 max level in D2. Of course, this all depends on how large the XP values are. If level 60 in D3 is equivalent to 99 in D2 then I wouldn't mind it too much. But that doesn't seem to be the case.
Sounds like a lot of the games longevity is based around in game content and Inferno mode (the new hardest difficulty). To me that sounds like getting 60 won't take that long to get, since you're supposed to be spending the majority of your time trying to get the best loot from Inferno.
Of course, we'll have to wait and see exactly how long it takes to get 60. My point is I just don't want to get the game, get 60 in a week then roll a new character. I never had a 99 in D2, or played that much of it to be honest, but I know that 99 represented commitment to the game since it took a long time to get.
Sounds to me like the end game content is just getting 60, then getting the best gear from Inferno.....Then what? I guess roll a new toon. Again, it all depends on how long it takes to get your gear and how long it takes to get 60. Inferno is supposedly brutally difficult, so hopefully it will take many, many moons.
2. No more assigning skill points or attributes.
This one has been discussed to death and addressed by Blizzard, but I still think the removal of that system kills a lot of customization you could've potentially had.
No longer can you pick how much of a certain stat you want, instead it's just automatically given to you as you level up.
Their reasoning behind the removal however was that a lot of people would find out an uber build, then everyone would do that, so in the end everyone is running around with the same builds. Which is lame, admittedly. But I think it's also lame not being able to assign what you want. Another wait and see thing I guess.
People say that's made up for with the new rune stones that let you customize specific abilities and spells, which does seem pretty cool, but there's only so many variations you can do. Being able to assign skill and attribute points on top of the rune stone system would've be an amazing level of customization.
3. No PvP at launch.
This one I could really give less of a shit about, but I'm more confused at why they chose not to ship it at launch. Considering how PvP is not the main focus of the game and they won't be balancing it for the game. Even if the system they had was complete shit, they might as well of shipped it with the game to appease the people who want to do some PvP for fun until they updated it to what they considered shipping quality.
4. The WoW/Casual community.
I don't consider myself and uber pro gamer or anything like that, but I'd definitely say I'm more hardcore than most other gamers. I put in many hours and I'm generally above average in most games being played. That said, I worry the "lesser skilled" players might find the game too difficult coming from a WoW/casual gaming background.
Companies always make comprises to appease the casual crowd. At considering a large number of sales are going to be from players who purchased a years worth of WoW subscription to get the game for, it's fair number of the WoW community will be playing and giving their two cents on the information.
And yes, I consider WoW players to be the scum of the earth, lowest common denominator of "gamers". Sorry if anyone here plays WoW, but I just can't really consider anything in the game to be skill based. Any accomplishment in that game is just an investment of time.
But anyways back to the main point, I just hope the company doesn't give in and make comprises (whatever they may be, lowering the difficulty etc.) because the majority of their playerbase are more casual players. I want the game to be hard as shit and kick your ass all the time so only the most hardcore of players can be successful within the game.
I don't know...Just my two cents on the game. A few complaints that are highly speculative here and there, guess I'll have to wait 'til Tuesday to find out if my suspicions are true or false.
Also, if anyone wants to form a group and play together let me know, I wouldn't mind playing with some PSU folk.

Yes. Why wouldn't it? You could ask the same for driving games, first-person shooters or platform games.
I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you, but consider that the driving, FPS, and platform genres have many, many games being made today, and their styles are still considered modern, and the status-quo... where as the "diablo genre" of point-and-click doesn't have much else going for it. (a few indie games come to mind).
So Diablo is the outlier here, and you can't use the same rhetoric as other modern games to judge it.
So this begs another question, if Diablo is as fun as other genres of games, why aren't more games like Diablo (top-down, point-and-click) being made today?

In order of release...
Sacred 2004
FATE 2005
Titan Quest 2006
Loki: Heroes of Mythology 2007
Legend: Hand of God 2007
Sacred 2 2009
Torchlight 2010
Path of Exile (in development)
Grim Dawn (in development)
Sacred 3 (in development)
Torchlight 2 (in development)
That's not including the Dungeon Siege games, which I thought were something else entirely, but apparently aren't.
Yes, there's less of them, but that could be for any number of reasons. Maybe they're harder to develop, maybe they take more time or more money, maybe they're harder to innovate with or maybe they're harder to code. Maybe big publishers don't like them for some reason.
I've used Legend of Grimrock as an example of under-utilized genre, now let me use MMOFPS. MMOFPS are under-explored, barely any exist and none of them have been wildly successful...Does that make it a bad genre? No. As Planetside fans we know the wall has been down to technology, but people who are less in the know might come to the conclusion that MMOFPS' are a bad genre. I simply don't know enough about the ARPG scene and the issues that present themselves when developing one, but considering how popular they still are (primarily D3, T2 and GD), I find it quite likely that the reason for their scarcity is something other than it being irrelevant/unfun/uninteresting.

I'm still not a fan of no offline mode and no mods, but other than that, should be good fun. Hopefully someone will eventually reverse engineer the server software. :D
Offline mode, just because I don't always have internet available, and sometimes I really enjoy hacking in crazy stuff. And mods speak for themselves.. There were some damned good D2 mods. After the way they embraced and supported modding for SC2, I'm amazed they didn't bother for D3.

Wow, thats pretty sad. I'm enjoying the hell out of the game so far, but mod support would have had a far greater impact on longevity than an auction house will.
I could honestly give a shit less about a lack of dupes/exploits/etc. Frankly, their drop rates are ridiculously low anyway, geared towards people who play for years.

Well seeing as whether or not it's a good purchase depends wholly on your subjective opinion of the game, I'm not sure how anyone can "assure" you of that.

A few of us Overlords have it and we enjoy it a lot. I've got a level 23 Monk. It kind of reminds me of a simpler time in gaming, when all you wanted to do was spend a night on TS bullshitting with your friends and doing a dungeon crawl. I've had a lot of fun with it so far, I think it's a great game that didn't try to lose it's identity to keep up with newer games. If you liked Diablo 2 and liked just having fun doing a dungeon crawl with some friends, you'll like this. If you are looking for the cutting edge in gaming, you can probably pass on it.
I think the sheer volume of copies that this sold in pre-order shows that it's exactly what most gamers were looking for. And yeah it sucks it's hosted on their servers but it's pretty much the only way for them to avoid pirates and hackers ruining the economy of the game.

By the way, I highly recommend D3Dark. It won't get you banned and it's not a mod to the game, but rather your graphics card that only activates when you play D3. Makes the game look darker and grimmer. D3 is a lovely looking game, but their infatuation with glow makes a lot of the detail get washed out. D3Dark tones that down and brings it closer to D1/D2, visually. Just do a Google search for it and check it out if you're interested.

We need to stop posting in this. It's so old and outdated.
This was a thread alerting people about the release date for a game that was released months ago. Just stop.
I realize that this post will bring it back to the top once more, but I'll post anyways in the hopes that it will be the last one.
The thread wants to die, let it go.
