Ive had this idea brewing for a while and I would like some feedback on it.
We had a great conversation about being able to change servers at will and I had a thought that this might lead to some great gameplay. On release every server could be its own planet. And yeah its kind of lame that every planet would be the same except for the people on it, my idea though is that in your safehold maybe once every fifteen minutes would be a flight off of your server to whichever server you would like to go to.
So in the future If the devs want to add space travel through player spaceships then the basic network is already there. So many possibilities and I think this kind of basic network would be the foundation of a real Planetside Universe.

Sounds complicated lol

Soooo, what happens to your outfit when you jump to another server? How are duplicate names handled? How would you deal with population imbalances created when people start jumping ship because their empire is losing? Too many variables, I'll pass thanks.

Regardless of the specifics, or the problems as above has stated, I'm just going to be the first to say, it's a good idea and concept even if it can't work. Who knows, maybe a dev will use for an expansion.

We would have to have unique names.
People can leave and people can show up so long as we dont go over the server limit on people.
If an entire iutfit would like to go rraiding and you log in and the outfit is offplanet you just run over to your foothold and catch a flight to the planet your outfit is on.

The way to travel between worlds would be very simple. Inside your empires foothold there would be a kiosk. When you access the kios there would be a list of all the servers and there current population. If you want to go to a busy server you might have to join a que for a while. Once you have selected the server you want you go to a waiting area and in a couple of minutes a graphic pops up with a pic of you traveling to whichever server you wanted stronghold.
Sometime later for an expansion maybe you could board an ingame ship and fly there kind of like taking the boat between the continents in WoW.

Cool idea, but you're not thinking about the technical shitstorm of having 20,000+ players migrating servers every 15 minutes.

I hate to say this but this happens every couple of minutes in bf3. Im not saying one server, im saying many servers comnected for One Planetside Universe.

I guess the first question you must ask yourself is, "Will it be necessary to change servers at all?"

Definitely an amazing and unique idea. A lot of technical hurdles to jump through but it would certainly unite the community as a whole even more than it is now.

I dont think normally a person would HAVE to change servers. But if nyour looking for a new challenge, assisting your empire on another world or just out raiding this should be fairly easy to implement considering where games are at today and this would add some depth to gameplay just allowing the ultimate in mobility.

Imagine your empire is getting destroyed. Being driven back to your own stronghold on every continent. You need help. When the word gets out that your empire on that unnamed server is being crushed, outfits from other worlds would come to help. Outfits you had never seen before. This is how I see interplanetary war happening on planetside2.

I really prefer being server locked so that each server is a community where everyone knows each other. But it's whatever, really. Don't mind too much either way. This idea is asking for a hell of a lot, though.

I don't much like the idea of server hopping. Many players will just hop around until they find a server where their faction is slaying and just join the zerg and coast along. For example TR population in PS1 has been half of what it usually is this week, due to the VS and NC guys doing live streams and gaining a lot of popularity for their empires.
So I think it's bad for server population balance. As Zulthus pointed out its also bad for server community (as you don't really have one - it's always in flux).
I'm also hoping that someday after launch the servers will start to look different - semi-permanent outfit bases and that sort of thing. So it's like shards in the UO sense, they all started out the same, but over time (and due to GM customization) each shard developed it's own minor but unique flair.

not a fan of server hopping , also if they are planning to implement any sandbox features to the game then server hopping wont be allowed.... they stated there are planing to add sandbox features to the game... you will be bound to your server unless you want to pay 10$ to have your account moved... another note, ps2 is f2p, why would they give you something for free when they can charge you for it?

I think that kind of like eve a larger community can only bring positives to each persone own personal game. I think that if this us implemented correctly it would be awesome. And your right if they do it like joining any modern day fps that wiuldnt be good for community at all.

Only game-breaking issue is the people. Call me a misanthrope, but I really think people will use this ability to jump-ship. Head over to the server where their empire is winning. Leading to the original server getting even weaker on that empire. Leaving only die-hard fans of that specific server, or if all the other servers have ques.
Unless you motivate outfits with extra XP or resources to be the underdogs, I don't think many will volunteer leaving their home server or a winning battle.

This seems like something that could come much later. When you listen to the devs talk about working on the game, you get the notion that the system in it are very modular (adding weather, for example).
Something like this would make a great content expansion for the future., maybe two or three years down the line.
Also, this seems like an Ideas Vault type of thread.

Yeah I was just kicking the idea out there to see if anyone could help fill it out. I know something like this hasnt really ever happened in any other mmo(EVEs system is implemented differently) and really trying something different like this has its own risks.
