Yes. Free to play. No subscription. No purchase cost. It is driven by in game purchases. It is not pay-to-win.

The best example you can think of right now:
League of Legends
Champions are in fact side-upgrades, as they explain how weapons/tank upgrades will be.
Skins are the cosmetics, same as in PS2.
You can spend ingame collected currency or take a shorter route by buying some cash to exchange.
You can not (theoreticly) buy the insta-win weapon/champion. (But this is all balance as new weapon = always potential imbalance)
In one year I spent slightly more on LoL than it would've cost me when subbing for one year at current MMO prices. It's a working business model, LoL proves it.
I have not read up too much though, but I'm presuming they'll also release new upgrades every now and then.

Timed deco angel's wings for 1 month: 10€
Everything about that sentence makes me want to puke: the item itself, it being a rental, the price.
I know it's just an example pulled out of nowhere, but damn...

I'd rather pay for the game, no monthly subs and unlock camo and items with xp only.

Yea it's to late for that.
It will be F2P with some sort of premium subscription. We are still awaiting solid details on their plans.

You have to understand that this game has zero PvE content. Any game that relies solely on other people to provide an experience will ultimately be limited if there is a cost barrier. If the game is free for everyone to play, more people will populate the servers over a longer period of time, providing you with more people to shoot. In this instance the free to play model makes a lot of sense.
I believe I heard Higby mention off the cuff that there might eventually be a subscription model for those that want it, but that isn't for certain. Anyway, I think it's a great idea.

Subscription is a big no-no for me.
Buy to play or free to play, those are the business models i accept.

This is one of the first AAA titles going F2P. Can't judge it until we see it imo. Also, as others have said already, this game is purely PvP. No PvE content at all. Which means the players are the content. Doesn't make much sense to charge people who generate the content. PS1 had this content issue since it was also PvP only but charged a monthly sub. There just wasn't that many people willing to keep a monthly sub for such a game.

I wish they would charge for the game itself - and not charge monthly. Less problems with hackers.
