Developer Spotlight with Kevin Moyer

Today's developer spotlight features Lead Vehicle Designer Kevin Moyer, we have seen Kevin a few times in SOE Podcasts.

What are some of the cooler things that you can do with vehicles that players can use in their gameplay strategy?

There are going to be some interesting strategies that come with tank locational damage. Successful tank squads will be those that learn how to flank enemy vehicles while protecting each other and not letting their allies’ weak spots get exposed. Another advanced tactic that I really enjoy is trying to hit tanks in rear armor with a Reaver. You have to fly really low to the ground to actually hit the weak spots. It’s more difficult and risky to pull off, but if successful, you do more damage.

They've really gone a different direction with the MAX suits.

Without a doubt, Quad with turbo boost gets the best airtime. I want there to be some rare places throughout the world where a quad can scale large obstacles that other vehicles can’t bypass, such as canyons, rivers or even facility walls, so I asked the world designers to make sure they design a few areas like this.
Very cool idea !

I find that the merge between Gal/AMS was also an interesting way to keep gals useful after a drop.

Now concerning driver/gunners... I just wasted 10 minutes convincing myself not to add anything about it but in the end, I managed to suppress myself successfully !

Should I join the TR ?

I like where they've been going with the vehicles.

Now if only they'd reveal the design document on that vehicle tweeted yesterday....

1) What is your name and title, and what is your role on the PlanetSide 2 team?

My name is Kevin Moyer, and I’m the lead vehicle designer on PlanetSide 2.

Bah, I can't hold it. This interview explains how they thought about the vehicles and partly explains why so things are as they are. It's great and just like you, I want to know more about the "why".

I would love to understand why/how the driver/gunners decision was taken but also how they plan to add buggies (this must have been thought about already).

If all vehicles are already designed fit roles and meant to be played in a way, I wish we'd know more about why/how, etc...

I do not care as much about how something is as long as I understand why it was made that way.

Those interviews are great but frustrating at the same time. It's like seeing those alpha videos: they raise more questions than they answer !

All of those things can be bypassed by air vehicles...what would be interesting is some kind of long tunnel that is an obscured shortcut to somewhere, but the only way through without walking are quad bikes...

What a great idea! A facility that inside looks like outside!

But I'd finally like to see a TR dev. Is there any at all? :o
