SOE Statement on Client Modifications

Recently players have been using client applications to fix wide screen issues as well as make the game look better with applications like SweetFX. SOE has made a statement in reguards to client modifications on the official forums.

It is vital that you not run software which modifies the Planetside 2 client in any way. If you do this, you are indistinguishable from various hacks that work in the same manner. The result of this is that you will be banned from gameplay and lose your characters/items.

We cannot make exceptions to this. We do understand there are relatively harmless apps that fall in this category, but if we allowed those they would simply be used as a shield excuse by players trying to cheat. This same rule applies to data that Planetside 2 uses for gameplay. Do not modify any of these files or attempt to modify them in memory.

There are some applications that modify the windows or directx environment without changing the client. These may also result in suspensions unless we specifically exempt them and declare them ok to use.

The most simple guidance here is do not use third party programs which change the Planetside 2 gameplay in any way unless it has been specifically cleared by SOE.

The above does not apply to user initiated *.INI changes, those are allowed, although setting your own options incorrectly can result in bugs.

As a clarification, since some players have asked, Mumble, Teamspeak, Fraps, and of course Steam, which all use overlays, are expressly allowed. Having an overlay to display information to the user not related to Planetside 2 itself is fine.

Essentially only modifications to the .ini files are allowed any other modifications could result in bans from the game. Hit up the comments thread here to discuss.

If they're not allowing SweetFX then they won't allow anything at all because it sits in the folder and doesn't interact with any of the files for the game. A little depressed that I have to go back to what the game looked like before SweetFx.

I fully support this. Now only things the game makers test and work with to make sure they give no unfair advantage over others not useing a mod can be allowed.

Wants to change the game code done on purpose to not allow a unfair advantage.

Whines about others changing or injecting game code to gain a unfair advantage on purpose.

I find it hard to believe no hackers are being banned.

Damn, that sweetfx thing looks sweet. One of my major complaints about the game is the color scheme ends up making everything look drab. Alas, I shall never know thee.

He brought it up with the graphics team and they made adjustments to the renderer afterwards.

Re: Client Mods not allowed

but will something be done about the ugly fog?

or will we get some more options like the ultra texturequality?
i was able to set textures on ultra during beta, but after release, changing them in the ini file doesn´t seem to do anything any more.

Found this on the official forums earlier today. I definitely see GPU under the bottleneck area of the FPS more than CPU now with the exception of the biggest fights.

Them removing the option of SweetFX was a total downer. It sucked going back to playing with the shitty drab colors.

Re: Client Mods not allowed

FYI for everyone, I PM'ed Twist (the SOE dev who posted about bannable mod's) about SweetFX specifically and he replied to me with this:

We would warn before any bans were associated with this. The problem with SweetFX is that it could be modified in various ways to achieve an advantage. As it is distributed now, it's relatively harmless.

We know some people use it, we would give warning before black listing it.
I can post a screenshot of this if you would like.

So it sounds like at the moment SweetFX is okay to use and they would give a warning before banning people for using it.
