QA gives you insight into the process and the products and teaches you how games are developed. I can see how it is good experience when moving on to other roles in product development.

That said I work in project management and design in software and didn't work in QA. However some of the work they do is useful for my job as well and is beneficial that I learn it. It definitely helps and would be hugely advantageous.

Plus if many of the developers did go through that they may view it as a rite of passage and frown upon those that didn't like they are missing some vital part of their career development.
