I don't know what threads you've been reading, but I've seen a lot of love and hate for all three empires' designs. For the most part I think people will choose their empire based on how they play more than anything, and the choice of color scheme for armor isn't going to "gimp" anyone.
Perhaps if you feel that strongly about aesthetics you should choose a different empire based on which one you think looks the best.

Nah Im too loyal but I do mire the others aesthetics.
Im sure for anybody in this site...gameplay>Looks.
All Im saying for people who are new to the game...they will pick Looks>gameplay.
