There were remote detonated explosives called "boomers".
There were 2 ways to detonate them - pulling the trigger, or hitting it with an EMP grenade (a "jammer"). Just shooting them or ramming with a vehicle would not set it off. One boomer does not deal much damage to a tank, and if you could place several on your ATV or buggy or whatever (I don't think you could place them on vehicles?), you could still only set off one at a time with your trigger and the first one would vaporize all the rest.
The closest thing to it would be bailing out of an aircraft and timing it so the falling aircraft would land and explode in a crowd. Galaxies would make a fairly powerful, large radius explosion. A good gal bomb looks like an orbital strike in the kill spam chat window, but it would kill you every time. Once you bail out, a single bullet will detonate your empty, falling aircraft - so you had to wait until the last minute to bail out on top of a crowd of people shooting at you.
