Thanks for doing the [recording of the] show. I missed it live for family reasons. I really enjoyed the content and discussions.
The concept of players building everything on a new planet is something that could work if the game has a high population. Player cities and housing were probably (together) the single most popular feature of Star Wars Galaxies, and not because people liked to decorate, rather because people really enjoy carving out an existence together. Back in 2003 when SWG launched, cities weren't actually in yet, but so many people still went out of their way to gather resources and team up to place housing into the world together, simply because that collective experience was benifit enough (even if it meant walking 6Km from the closest NPC city). When player cities came in, they added a lot conveniences, like shuttle ports and class trainers, but like I said, even before those things people proved that being able to build something together was the real draw of the game play system. In terms of PS2, I think it could work very well, because there isn't any game play beyond PvP, so there would always be an emphasis on defending those things you and your friends created in the world. In essence, the nature of the game itself would compel people to take part in the community/outfit aspect of the building, designing, and defending these locations that the would be the pride and joy of your outfit (and maybe even your faction as a whole). I mean, how cool would it be to build and maintain a huge base that the other factions simply can't pound into the ground - because your faction is dedicated to keeping what they created! There's a lot of emotional power to a system like this and with the focus in Everquest II (and EQN from what I have heard) on player created content, I could see SOE going this route in the long term for PS2. When you look at what they have done with EQII, Vangaurd, and SWG it's absolutely within the bounds of reason. Last edited by Tatwi; 2012-07-23 at 12:38 PM. |
