Gamer cards

I'm not exactly sure of the point of gamer cards. I mean, I thought I could just use those cards, since I dont have access to a credit card. But it turns out I would have to buy one every 3 months, and that would be annoying, but since im getting a job soon i might be able to afford that 40$ a month (its actually 39.99, but 40 is close enough). So does that sound like a good idea to anyone, or am I making no sense what so ever?
