Processor Questions

Two questions one about overclocking and the other about upgrading processors:

I have an HP, is it possible to upgrade the processor and what kinds of processors other than my AMD Athlon 2400+ would work with it. Here is some info about my CPU and mobo:

ok first off id get motherboard monitor and check out the current tempature. 40 C and under is cool. Then if you decide to overclock you must go into you bios and find the setting for change FSB(front side bus) only go up 5-10mhz but if its multiples you do this equation ( i cannot seem to remember could someone post it?). But, you might not be able to overclock if HP disabled it. You have to check your bios

Its highly doubtful you can doing any OC'ing with an HP. I would be extremely shocked if they left that option available in the bios. Most big manufactuers customize bios and its nothing for them to leave 50% of the configurables just out of it so they don't get calls from ppl with dead systems that are now no good under warranty.

You will prolly have trouble fitting a standard mb in the HP case also. The via km266 chipset is pretty old to. Doubt it will take anything above a xp2400 as it won't support fsb speeds of 333/400 properly.

Although if you don't want to spend more money on a new mobo, there is a way to oc hp/compaq/dells. I'm not positive it works with hp but I'm pretty sure it works with compaq/dell so you might wanna try it. link (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=223775&highlight=overclock+dell)
Its a software utility that changes your FSB without using bios. However if you do have the cash there is no doubt you'll want to get a new mobo and don't bother with this 'software overclocking'.

As it is, your temperature was standard for normal use (52.0�C idle, probably go up to 60 or so on load)

BUT

That would do no good for overclocking, HP has locked out most of the stuff in the bios, and also, I know nothing of your RAM speeds or mobo chipset.

If you want a CPU to overclock, get an Athlon 2500+ "barton" core, with some PC3200 DDR, you can get them to 3000+ speeds easily on an NForce2 board :D
