So, they're acknowledging that flying will be much different. That's cool. So basically if you're A) a gear-whore, B) a realism purist, C) a dedicated air-cav pilot or D) not one of those Mossie-bailure rhymes-with-maggots...

Save your money. You'll probably want one of these:

I really do hope piloting can be done with keyboard and mouse, but potentially more effective with joysticks and the like.

Personally I use the keyboard and mouse. Haven't ever used a joystick in Planetside. Then, I'm not a dedicated pilot - the flight mechanics in Planetside were too simple to merit switching between keyboard/mouse and joystick. Depending on how flight works in Next, I may use a joystick for dedicated CAS nights. I do love me some flight-sim and 'Mech sim, so I may pick this up if I have spare cash.

And by spare cash I mean, left over after my paintball budget.

Nice - be interesting to see how involved flying becomes in PSN.

I'm sure it's been covered elsewhere on the boards here. I'm hoping the Reaver becomes a two-seater gunship (two seats being required to make it an effective gun platform) with VTOL/Heli handling. I'm hoping the Mossie supercedes the Wasp and is an air-to-air platform. A much higher ceiling cap at the worst, ceiling cap gone at the best. I'm hoping it has realistic flight characteristics. The ability to do rolls, inverted flying, etc.

You know. Basic realistic flight characteristics that other games much older than Planetside were able to figure out?

WASDEC and Spacebar works for me. Planetside's flight is incredibly overly-simplistic. I feel like, for me personally, it's a waste of time to move my keyboard and mouse out of the way to reach over and grab my joystick.

I used my joystick for MW4, until I realized how much better your aim could be with a mouse.

I'm a fan of a better flight mechanics...I just hope that it's still simple enough that a mouse and keyboard are sufficient.

I hope it's realistic. It doesn't have to be Flight Simulator or X-Plane, I just don't want say... TC-H.A.W.X. That game is terrible..

Arma 2 is about as simulatory as I want it to get. For PSN I would say that would be too much.

Whatever they do to the flight mechanics, I doubt that it will make joysticks more useful than a keyboard/mouse combo

In planetside, a joystick functioned better any time you needed to fly and use crosshairs. There were plenty of great players who used mouses, but a Joystick was better for people who had not gotten used to using a mouse to fly with.

I also think that when Smed said that, he meant Fixed-wing takeoff and landing is in the cards.

Remember in BF2, how hard it was to pilot a jet with a mouse, but how much easier it was to fly with one? I think this will be the same in PS:N.

Flying like in BF1942 would be perfect. I sucked with a mouse there, but was a hero with a stick. I usually killed 5 guys with the MG and then dropped a bomb on a Tank, without ever missing. No other pilot could even remotly deal with me, i even managed to drop bombs on enemy planes flying around. It was ace, i loved it, and if i could get that feeling back for a game with hundrets of players, i wont ever leave a plane again. :)
