"we're going to allow adjustments from 60 - 90 degrees."

From Higby's twitter. I'm actually fine with this, but what's your thinking?

Just curious. What are the other games' normal FoV? (like games such as 'Crysis', 'BF3', 'Doom3'...)

75 degrees is the standard IIRC.

Not fine with me whatsoever.

My FPS background is Quake and TFC, both of which I set my FOV to 135 which I believe is the perfect FOV, though for fast-paced shooters.

I believe that PS2 should go up to 120.... though I would be content with 110.

Please don't constrain my sight to 90, I really can't stand it.

I'm fine with whatever as long as there isn't an abrupt change when using vehicles. That hurts my head.

I think 90 is perfect for an FPS.

FoV doesn't matter as long as everyone is on equal playing field. 90 degrees is fine as well, anyone saying otherwise must have .001 sensitivity.

Probably a good idea to put it in to stop totalbiscuit bitching on about it for five minutes in his review.

I'd PREFER to have the option of 120. But I'm not going to complain too loudly at 90.

So long as it's not stuck at a freaking console-like 65-75. That would just be embarrassing to everyone involved.

why would you choose 60°, if you can get 90°?

I don't think I've ever adjusted the FOV in any game. I'm just not that picky about that stuff.

Distance. Increasing FOV increases how much you can see to your sides, below, and above you, at the cost of distance. Having a FOV of 10 would basically be a sniper scope.

Dedicated snipers are probably going to play in 60 exclusively.

Example pictures. Ignore the ones on the right.

I don't think I've ever adjusted the FOV in any game. I'm just not that picky about that stuff.

Not tuning your FOV to suit you is a bad idea. You could really improve your game with a better FOV.

Skyrim defaults to 60 (every god damned time you start the game) and it feels constrained, 90 is good though.

What I would like is the option to go up to 120 degrees as this is the limits of human vision, and I am interested in going for a three monitor set up (hey, it is Planetside 2)!

Ya i play around 90ish on skyrim. It looks horrible @ 120 the arms look horrible, you can tell they designed that for consoles. While 120 on tribes ascend is amazing, none of the long stretched arms.

Only FPS I've really played was PS. I played a little BF 2142 with The Overlords and some CoD on 360 with friends, so FoV was never something I even thought about before a month ago when I saw someone mention it. Steam had Deux Ex: HR on sale for $10 last week so I bought that and while going through the options it had FoV. Was default set to 75, so I messed around with it and 95 seemed the best to me. Any higher and things got weirdly skinny.

I play on TV so I'm not too fussed but for the people that do play on monitors FOV adjustment is necessary.

Ideally it would be adjustable up to 100 or even 120.

I have never messed with fov on any game before. It just looks off if I change it. So what exactly do the different field of views look like? What is the difference between a 60 and a 90 and a 120?

Thinking about it some more, they might as well utilize being a PC exclusive by making higher FoVs available. It'd certainly win them brownie points with some people.

With higher FOV your actual screen get smaller, you get more peripheral vision, you feel like you watching it from distance, and moving faster. Some ppl can get headaches from very small or very high FOV.
I prefer 100 but 90 should be enough.

this could get you some insight into this

I've never cared enough to change it in purpose.

What's BF3? Sometimes I feel like I have just a smidgen to little peripheral vision.

Having the FOV at 120 would mean a severe advantage over other people wouldn't it? The larger the number the more you can see to your sides? Kind of cheap, makes me mad people in here are basically asking to have that big of advantage over everyone using the normal FOV.

Zulthus
2012-03-04, 08:02 PM
I think the max FOV should be 100. I use 90 at most and that's perfect. Seeing too much around you isn't fair to other players that don't use it. I really think FOV should be something that's set in stone for each player, non-adjustable.

Did you watch the videos Glump posted?

A larger FOV means everything gets smaller in order to squish into the same area of space, which means making things harder to hit. It also might be the natural FOV for someone with a large monitor/multiple monitors (I'm not sure whether FOV adjusts to accommodate multiple monitors anyway, so that might not apply).

Edit: http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/battlefield-bad-company-2-pc/920963-fov-comparison-screens.html

It certainly makes a big difference graphically, but I'm not sure how often you'd find your ass saved by having an extra 25 FOV...

Wow. I knew that increasing the FoV did that, but I didn't know it was that extreme.

I get the points about single monitor. I was referring to say a 3 monitor setup where they can see a LOT more to there left and right without actually having to turn in game.

Your normal FOV is a lot greater than 135 degrees, but your field of being able to discern details, colors, etc, is less than that I'm thinking.

I guess we will see how it works out.

Ah. Yeah, I'm not sure about that. Still, the amount of people running the game across 2+ screens will be a minority, and I don't think that's what people are advocating here.

It depends whether multiple screens add to the sides or cut from the top/bottom.

Yeah, I don't care about the 3D tech much, but EyeFinity technology or something along the line of it? Well, I think it possibly can stir the pot with many people, regarding the combat balance(whether they be minute or broad).

I personally use 1 17" monitor on my laptop to play games, but if someone wants to use 3 monitors to experience the game let them have 120 degrees. Doesn't bother me in the slightest. I have friends that play games like that and it does make it more immersive having that kind of peripheral vision.

Video comparison from Quake Live(can't find a really good quality video comparison)
FOV comparison in QuakeLive - YouTube

For those of us that have been using 110~130 FOVs for decades, 90 is much too zoomed in, and the movement is drastically different.

Having the extra sight to your sides isn't the point of FOV , it's the movement of the camera that is important. Someone who plays FPS games in 120 all day would become frustrated at 90 because their actual muscles used for aiming are not going to be used to it.

Allowing up to 120 isn't going to make people who play in 90 or lower inferior, and not allowing to go above 90 is going to hurt those that play above 90. This is all about comfort.

I encourage the dev team to allow up to 120.

more options = the better!

this...once i went to 120 i could never go lower unless the hands/arms/guns were distorted by lazy design at 120
