View Full Version : Phoenix Flight Limit???

Will the Phoenix have a flight limit? I mean, will it be able to fly forever or will it have a timer or something? I think it should or else people could just stay at their base and constantly attack bases in other continents with them. Doesn't this seem like a cheap way to get BEPs?

you cant fly/swim/jog/skip to other contonents, you have to warp gate or drop pod it. There is something on each contanant that provides enegy for all the vehicles, if you get to far out on the ocean and far from it you lose power and stall, making you stuck out there. Most enclosed vehicles (i.e tanks) can go underwater a short time, and the deliver (sp?) has an aquatic mode. So no ICBM's for j00. Oh its a TOW missle meaning it has a limit depending on the length of its wire, proably 400 meters or so.

Oh ok good. I was hoping that they had something to prevent people from shooting Phoenix's from miles away and taking out entire squads.

According to the weapon page, Phoenix range= Long, while the BoltDriver = Very Long.

One of the devs posted here recently, an artist.

He said something along the lines of "And when someone kills you with a phoenix from 2 miles out, that'll be me". That's not quite what he said, but you get the idea.

Of course this is all before BETA, so ranges are Subject To Change Without Notice.

each empire has an equivalent of a bazooka, NC's version, the phoenix will resemble the redeemer of Unreal Tornament.... they will all have advantages and disadvantages...

I'm guessing they will not be used at long range, the wire will hopefully be finite...... it will however be a useful tool, u could sit on top of a clif or hill, spot squads with a scope of some kind, find cover and fire whilst behind the cover, goodbye squad...... the missile would probably sound some kind of alert to the squad (hopefully), like a kind of missile proximity detector in the HUD. Us NC's will surely have alot of fun with it :)

Us TRs will have a lot of fun firing, forgetting and sneaking up behind NCs piloting their Phoenixs

yep, i have no doubt that that many kills will be made against NC's who's minds are absent, piloting thier Phoneix's..... thats one limitation, but the limitation of TR's versin is that the fire and forget locking won't work on troops, only vehcles.

whilst on the subject will these type of missiles be able to be used effectively against aircraft? Will a squad of men on a hill be able to take out a low flying galaxy with a small barrage of missiles? Will faster aircraft be able to make evasive maneuvers succesfully?

This game provides endless oppurtunities doesnt it?

It all depends on the pilot, some guys will be fucking impossible to shoot down and some will die if to many people even look at him.

Tobias

or, with some pilots, they will get in the air craft and
a) ram something before getting out of the base
b) ram a treee/moutian/base
c) crash for no apparant reason

like tribes/tribes 2 =p

that was... not what i expected you to say.

Oh, and i think the fact that you have to wait before you respawn vehicles will keep kamikazie levels down.

I think it will be like this:
Vanu: lowest damage, no splash, very accurate. Fires the most times before reload, or maybe a large charging time between shots, will be seen.
TR: Clip, limited locking, Max killer me thinks, so so damage with low splash radius. clip with 4-8 shots at my guess, fastest firing proably.
NC: Single shot TOW missle, can guide, but will take skill to use well. Proably most damage and highest splash other then Decimator. but again a single shot only.
Common pool:
-Decimator: Most damaging missle, only get one shot though and its dumb fire.
-Rocklet: Low damage, big clip and is not huge, proably does not take up as much space, leaving more room for ammo/weapons. Notice damage is listed as medium not high. Lots less damage. Proably good against buggys and light tanks as well as turrets though.
-Thumper: nade luancher, medium dmg, large splash, like T2 morter but not as much dmg, nuff said.
-Punisher: machine gun with a single rocket. Rocket is proably little bit more powerful then a single Rocklet rocket. Proably not very useful, UNLESS it can be reloaded, then it might have use for those suits that cant carry both an assult rifle and a anti vehicle weapon.

Flechette Rifle
Source: Common Pool
Handling: Shotgun
Damage: High
Maximum Range: Medium
Refire Rate: Medium

Built upon standard shotgun technology, the Flechette Scatter Rifle fires multiple flechettes that are capable of piercing heavy armor at close range, making it a useful weapon against soldiers as well as armored vehicles.

Beamer
Source: Vanu Sovereignty
Handling: Energy Pistol
Damage: High
Maximum Range: Short
Refire Rate: Medium

The Beamer is the handy sidearm of the Vanu Sovereignty. It uses energy cells instead of regular ammunition, and thus has some flexibility over other sidearms. It can be converted from a regular energy blaster to a more focused, armor piercing shot that consumes more energy. Thus, it is good for regular close-in firefights as well as a reasonable anti-vehicular weapon.

Heh that pistol reminds me of the one from HALO that the aliens had... doesnt seem all that useful against vechicles to me.

I'm expecting some pretty "creative" phoenix tactics:

#1 Scout phoenix. Got a quick look at enemy positions, then plow into something. Or just park yourself inside a base near a terminal and a window... Keep a phoenix in the air at all times as a poor man's Mosquito.

#2 Multi-strike: Fire AWAY from the target, get lined up (target had better be stationary), then let it go dumb-fire. Fire the next one at the target, get lined up, go dumb-fire. Properly timed, both missiles should strike at the same time.

It may be possible to do this with 3 or more missiles, provided you've got an INV terminal handy, or a vehicle's trunk.

A large number of coordinated phoenixes will be pretty darn impressive.

I wonder if the plasma grenades will stick onto people and vehicles like they do in Halo. I think that would be really cool.

m0rphiu5

it would be very cool if they did, very cool indeed could turn an armoured vehicle ito a timebomb, ready to blow up the squad its heading to reinforce.....

i dont think they have announced the beta ppls

Yeah, no beta news yet.

Anyway, my guess is the pheonix will probably have quite poor handling to account for its long range. I.e. you may have to fly it 300m to do a U-turn. Rather than actually making the pheonix something where you hide somewhere and fire, you just use it to fine-tune your aiming. At least that's how I'd design it.

Oh yes, I'd like to add I'm going to be a pheonix/devestator/general heavy weaponary specialist.

Tobias

i dont think so.....

A 300 meter U-Turn? You nuts? I bet no one would want to use one if that was the case!

Tobias
2002-12-02, 07:10 PM
I think it will
a) have a limited distance it can go from the user before the user loses control, or
b) have a limited flight time i.e. 30 secs before it self detonates because its fuel cells run dry.
