There were TR in the same base that VS got spawned in. They didn't head back to warpgate or any crap like that, they were just killed once the event started by the few VS who remained in base.

Those VS who immediately hacked out mozzies at Atar and went up to farm the TR foot zergers at Hvar.
YOu could have also defended Atar easily, the NTU kept filling and dropship centre is the easiest base to defend in the game - particularly in a courtyard 3 way.
