Living in Quebec, with relatives in the countryside, I have the advantage of being able to get good stuff from quite a lot of microbreweries, including some fine limited runs (which, around here, all seem to average around 9 to 12%, I guess we like our brews on the strong side). We also get a nice Beerfest every summer, to turn kiddies into real "beer enthusiasts" (read, men), and have some memorable stories along the way
As for taste, I favor the thick, hearty stouts (even in summer, although the waiters at the terrace think I am a madmen), with a weakness for the Imperial ones. I also like the red and amber ales, but microbrewed ones are somewhat rare here (although the Alexander Keith's is quite drinkable in a pinch).
Oh, and Pinkie, if you are American (or Canadian even...), you might want to try to come over here, in La Belle Province, the drinking age is mostly a suggestion
