Dont you think its easier to camp 2 teleporter rooms if you have the mainspawn compared to a teleporter room?
Also having the main spawn allows faster class change (no need to go down to the outpost), faster resuply etc etc. Also having the BioLab gives you more InfRes (and thus more MAXs/C4/Nades etc).
Like you said it was a competition vs. your own empire. But that doesnt change the fact that the whole event was bad because it was extremly unbalanced.
Add to that that the stream was horribad and the event fails. It took the camera guy 25min to realise its a bad idea to be an invincible, speedhacking godmode NC Char before he made himself invisible. Also no commentator for the whole thing, first 20min they were extremly quiet and after that they stoped altogether.
