My only thought here is with regards to those extra character slots. These character slots become available if you become a member.
When you drop your membership, what happens to those slots? Do they just disappear along with your characters? Will you still have access to those characters after you drop your sub?
If not, then those players are effectively paying a subscription fee for those the continued use of those three characters. The question then is - how many people would maintain a membership specifically for that purpose? Is this a part of the service people would really pay for, especially since they would probably put their most valued characters in their non-member slots?
If they can still use them, then what's to stop people from just unsubbing straight away and keeping the characters they made in those slots? And if this is the case, and you're offering it as a membership freebie anyway, wouldn't it make more sense from a profit margin standpoint to just sell character slots in the shop and avoid all this logistic weirdness?

If you sub and unsub, you don't get your money back and you still have that subbed time. So if you sub 1 month, it's like buying the 3 slots for $5 each, but now you have 1 month of subscription. Playing with sub for the first time, you may like the extra XP, resources, passive certs and shorter continental ques. You may decide to sub longer. The character slots are permanent either way, so it's a free gift if you're already subbed and just one more reason to try subbing if you're not. It could result in more subscribers.
