Well, you already have medicare, veterans' health care coverage, and other state-run forms of health care. They seem to work pretty well. If they couldn't be translated into a plan that covers the entire population, you can look at pretty much every other developed nation for examples of what works.
It won't happen though. Jingoism has more political clout than compassion. Having an inefficient system that gouges people of money and leads to poor health stats for the nation is the American way of doing things, and I think for a lot of people that's all that needs to be said.
