Without looking into the detail of your post I agree in general with it's thrust.
The thing about ps1 was that it was a game of different levels. The trick for the devs is to make ps2 more accessible for casual/new players but have the long term interest to keep people hooked for years as ps1 has done. - I tihnk they're doing the first but I don't know they're doing the second.
It would be great if in a few years time there were people saying that the ps2 experience had spoiled every other game because other games couldn't live up to it.
