I'd always heard Backhack to, more specifically, mean attacking a rear-line base, defenders or no. Often done by the 3rd empire not already involved in a cont battle.
"WTF, NC backhack? There goes the cont."

And while we're at it. Cont: Continent, later turned into planets. Still called conts.

Lesser used: Circle Jerk: When all 3 empire are stuck on the same cont, making no progress for hours or days. Threeway meets stalemate.
"How's Cyssor going?"
"Circle Jerk, hour 36."
