Engineer:Cannot equip slots 4 or 5

Started having problem with the engineer this afternoon. Was fine this morning, then I couldn't access my slots 4 & 5. The icons were visible, I unequipped and reequipped via the loadouts, I swapped loadouts, I swapped my ammo and my mines back and forth, I swapped to a medic for a while then back to engineer too. No joy.
I can't select 4 or 5 via the mouse scroll, and when I try the direct numeric select I get a 'blat' noise.
Anyone see this happen to them? Amy idea what the problem is?
