There are about 5600 feet in a mile. The muzzle velocity of most modern hand-held guns is nowhere near a mile a second. They're probably around 1/2 a mile a second, possibly 2/3rds. So, no, instant hit bullets aren't terribly real unless you're right next to what you're shooting at. Just watch some old Desert Storm videos showing the US fighters on night missions. When the ground batteries fire tracer rounds, you can clearly see them going through the air. Those tracer rounds are moving
fast, but your eye can still pick them up.
