Cavern Sub-Hexes? The Fight for Resources


So before you rage and say OMG CAVES WTF NO!

Let me explain:

I am not talking about the caves we know in Planetside. Ziplines, telepads, module buildings, etc.

I am talking about holes in the ground with resource nodes inside them, making for some pretty intense close quarters fights over those resources.

From the title my initial thought was this:

Imagine a resource hex, now imagine said hex with sub hexes that are required to be captured in order to gain control of the hex. Some would be larger than others, some would have more or less sub hexes.
Edit 1: (This idea has been brought up before and it looks like some have shown interest in this.)

I was showing off the game to a bunch of colleagues at work, and they were worried the game would just be a huge vehicle farm with little to no infantry combat. Caves in Planetside were great for open (when compared to facilities) infantry combat at a relatively close range.

Having something like this as I said before would really make for some awesome infantry battles and a place where I think Light Assault troopers will truly shine. Niche combat roles are really important in this game to keep the gameplay fresh and keep you on your toes.

Thoughts? PS. Don't hurt me....

Well we know how large the continents are but do we know how large the planet below is? MIND BLOWN!

Your idea brings the huge mothership looking thing into mind.... the possibilities are endless.

Heh, I already mentioned this on IRC a few times to Arclegger (one of the level designers) that they need caves (underground holes in the ground) and floating islands. I even put caves and floating islands as content upgrades for continents so they age gracefully and don't get stale in the "3 year thoughts" thread.

The idea of a 3 level battle on a map sounds fascinating to me.

If we want this game to be as massive as its ambitions we need to allow for expansion. However, with expansion comes hesitation of the unknown. People might be like, "Oh new floating island wtfbbq, thats dumb" and not even give it a chance. Or "Caves? Core Combat ruined Planetside raaagge!"

I just don't see why we can't have these features at release? Is it difficult to add new terrain maybe?

Tunnel Rats outfit needs to be made!


Also sky bases should absolutely AMAZING! What if you could build faction Titans(like 2142) and pilot them over enemy hexes.

This was discussed at the AGN on Saturday, some people liked the idea of Outfit controlled air ships. I marvel at the thought of a squadron of reavers deploying from an airship.

Despite all the hate for the caves I believe there was still a large Fraggle population, we just need to find them again.

Iam absolutly for it Caves and underground base and mines are a MUST HAVE this will simply make the game even more interesting in many ways
