Out of curiosity, why is this? Surely May 20th would have been the better date as that was when PS1 was released.

Last year some members of AT (I think it was AT) set up a PS day for one last big event before PS2. They didn't start setting it up until almost May, so they scheduled it for July 1st instead of May 20th so people had plenty of time to get the word out.
