When does Alpha take effect?

So I bought the Alpha squad before I deployed. I reserved my player name before I left and wanted to know when the exp boost took effect. Is it from the start of the relase of PS2 or when I log on and make my dude?

It's an implant you equip - so it starts from when you put that on I believe.
