I must agree with it depends on the engine.

In Gold Source a ping of 60 or less is ideal but in Source I have been content with 120 ping. Probably because the hit boxes are bigger and people move slower but I would like to believe better optimization played a role as well.

Opponents with 150 ping are noticeable especially if they choose to be snipers.

Also the only time i want a bad latency is so i can shoot people that on their screen they are behind cover but on my screen they are still running, but its not good when walking round a corner because the enemy has perfect connection so by the time i shoot i am already dead

wow you guys are very forgiving to the devs regarding latency.

I won't choose a match in any game over 60ms

So you blame the devs for bad latency? They can only have so much control over the latency, I would laugh to see some of you play with 200ms-500ms because after 5 seconds you would throw your gaming device out the window

The devs have absolutely nothing to do with latency. They would only handle the netcode that would make the game playable with bad latency. Blame the ISPs or distance for bad latency.

Highest acceptable latency is anything equal to or less than my opponents. As long as it's a level playing field, it doesn't matter much either way.

Poll options are much too rigid... and putting them in a context would help. Latency matters a lot more while sniping than say... driving through a minefield.

NC 20 points a shot, 5 shots to get to 100 points. Same TTK.

VS is somewhere in between... where am I wrong? Rough example, but it seems to me either NC has it worse, or no one does...
Your maths are fine, however with the slower ROF of NC weaponry, it is highly improbable NC would lose ANY rounds to lost packets. If they did, in a fixed time frame for comparison, the TR would lose many more bullets due to their faster ROF. And the tracking, like Brusi said, was crucial to finish engagements quickly. Otherwise you do look like a sprayer prayer.

To add into that, when the NC missed a shot it was the whole pellet spread not one shot.

Not to say that missing a shot as TR wasn't damning either as the MCG had another .13 seconds on its TTK vs the JH and Lasher.

In any case we can agree bad netcode kills FPSes. I never noticed latency giving missed shots just delayed positions like dieing behind cover. Bad netcode, which Planet Side had, leads to missed shots all together.

That's understandable for a game like CSS or MW3, but you have to keep in mind that Planetside's (and presumably PS2's) hybrid server/client-side hit detection made it feel like you were playing with < 50ms latency even when it was creeping up to 200 or 300ms in huge battles.

This same concept is being overhauled and implemented again in PS2, so even those guys with several hundred ms of latency will be formidable in direct combat.

This is an important point to make especially with the tanks we saw in the GDC footage. That wasn't so much latency as what appeared to be a naive snap algorithm that wasn't interpolating/extrapolating the tanks motion correctly on the client.

Feel pretty spoilt in FTTC with PlusNet (basically BT Infinity) where I get a 13ms ping to UK servers and around 20ms to European servers compared to some of the US results posted.

I hate latency too and prefer my games to be < 30ms where possible.

Back in the day on Werner, I used to get a solid 30-45ms whuch was just fine (so much better than the 150-180ms we get to West Coast US Gemini server now it's moved).

In many cases though, a stable/solid latency (even if slightly higher) can feel better than one which is generally lower but has a high degree of jitter (variation) in ping time.

For this reason (certainly in the UK) I prefer gaming on ADSL connections rather than Cable (which seems more suseptible to congestion and local varations in quality).

As an Australian trying to get a signal half way around the bloody world, anything under 300 would work. Think I used to get around 250 with original PS, and that was playable.

So long as their netcode is good, it'll be fine.

relax kids.. it was a typo i know the devs don't control latency...but they do control how optimized the networking within the games are.

myself 60 and below is fine.. anything over and you never know what your gonna get.

With my physical location and internet, I'm used to and satisfied with 50-80 ms. Rarely get less than that, but also rarely get more than that to any european server in a sensemaking location.
