Will PS1 go f2p?

Considering the inevitable release of PS2 is dawning upon us, would you think it possible that SOE would perhaps let PS1 go f2p as a tribute to PS2s f2p model and also SOE could use PS1 as a kind of PS2 for lower end PCs. SOE could definitely make money out of this, as I would think people would also pay station cash for in-game items and even possibly have PS2 players get some cool nostalgic camo or armour from PS1 when they play it.

What your thoughts on this.

I really doubt they would do this. They would have to devote a couple of devs to make the shop/change the game to need a shop. Also, Planetside used to have a F2P model (Planetside Reserves) that was shut down due to hacking (which would still be a problem as the game is still 99% clientside).

Not totally sure Fodderside was closed due to hacking, but it was open for a full year and it was stated to.

The Reserves program was more like a trial account. You were limited in BR. If I'm not mistaken, I do believe they did stop the program due to exploits they could never devote enough time to fixing. I thought that was the reason tbh.

This started in March 2006 and was only slated for a year. Very possible the reason behind the program not being renewed was just due to the hackers and other issues.

They did plan to make PS1 F2P. What happened was we got PS2 instead.

I really doubt there will be a PS1 at all after PS2 launch.

They should include PS1 as an extra of the PS2 premium.

I doubt we will see PS1 go F2P, it requires dev time. Figments idea is sound though

I thought Smed said something on twitter about PS1 not being shut down after PS2 launched, but I may be mistaken. If that's the case, I think Figment's idea is good. I wouldn't mind going back every once in a while.

He did somewhere. But considering the low pops to begin with and the fact they'll only get lower on PS2 release, it may well get shutdown.

If it was free and there were more people playing (like when all the accounts got reactivated and we had 2 pop locks a night) I would never stop playing PS1. Even with the terrible netcode and dated graphics, it's a way better experience than PS2 right now (and for the foreseeable future). If they managed to fix the netcode and update the graphics, then I'd play the game forever and ignore PS2 entirely.

This. Base fights always made me so mad because people bounced all over the place and teleported like crazy.
