What are outfits?

Hi guys, my name is Cattro. I'm pretty new to Planetside and like near everyone on here, needs a little help or boost, with anything. I.e. Outfits and platoons, the likewise.

How do I join them?
Where is this feature?
How do i access it?
what do you do in these squads/platoons?
What role will i play throughout the game?
