laser pointer a la tribes

i want it in planetside 2. don't you?

it's a simple tool. just shoots a benign beam of light and prints the distance to the target. it is visible to friendlies and foes. useful for so many things. would love to at least have it as a leadership progression tree reward

I would like to see laser pointers that DON'T have a beam-trail. Just a dot. Like they do in most atmospheric conditions in the real world.

You mean, how do you use it as a big electronic flag to attract attention from someone? You don't. That would definitely require that visible beam.

I was thinking you meant using it as a dot for sighting in on. In that case, a dot would be good, and the lack of a "here I am, Reavers, come and use your cheats to rape me without taking damage" beam would be a plus.

a dot would barely be visible.

So, of course, you could use a large dot, or a large crosshair, or something else, blinking, for greater visibility.

I would very much like to see a laser target designator like they had for locking missiles onto targets in tribes 2. An invisible beam would make a lot more sense and it would give commanders the power to point at things in real time to the squad or platoon. For example, squad leader points at a tank that is hiding from missiles behind a hill, entire squad locks onto the targeting beacon and fires into the air so the missiles go over the hill, tank crew shits its pants.

I always felt a good compromise would have been that a small unobtrusive dot would be visible, but the beam would only be visible with darklight.

Tell you what: The beam can be visible for allies and only visible with darklight for enemies. You can always explain it with ES visor calibration.

Besides same thing can be done with laser sight. No need to have that BF3's "See where I am" type of laser sight.

I already imagine a situation:
- C'mon, let's go, this canyon looks clear.
- Wait, lemme check... *Turns on DL* OMFG THAT PLACE IS CRAWLING WITH SNIPERS!

i think it would be important for laser painters to be a solid beam. from an aerial perspective it would be much more evident the distance between friendlies and foes and also it illustrates a line of sight which in some situations can give the pilot or observer better situational awareness or a better idea for a course/angle of attack.

for basic command purposes, i think captioned waypoints coupled with a laserpointer for field illustrations (showing your squad what you want to see done by using landmarks and not the map.) would be very effective.

AND OMG RADANT WILL MAKE AWESOME RAVE VIDEOS WITH LASORZ

They already had something like this in Planetside, it was called the Laze Pointer, it used a visable beam, both to enemies and freindlys, to paint a target. Though on to your Squad or Platoon, it would also make a huge beacon once the painting was complete. This was really only useful for Flails to target stationary enemies.

I would assume in Planetside 2 they will have something similar to this.
