Same deal. The 550 ti is slightly better than the 6750, but the 6850 is a big jump up. 550 ti should be fine for the Pavilion, but not for 1080p.

Edit: http://www.ebuyer.com/391772-xfx-hd-...e-hd-685x-zcfc

That's the cheapest of the cheap for 6850s. Your mileage may very vary.

Given your components it should be fine even with one fan.

What case and mobo do you have? Been awhile since we have done this for you and I don't know if you changed anything since then.

Did your case come with anything like looks like this?

Yeah it should. If you really want the other fan hooked up I recommend getting one of these. That hooks up to this connector on the PSU, which allows you to run the fan. It doesn't cost that much and will make for proper air flow at least.

would that do it or does splitting the power reduce their effectiveness?

or this as a cheaper version

Why not just go with the one he linked?
That'll draw right off the PSU instead of splitting a motherboard fan header.

Re: need help building a gaming rig

ok so my computer is starting to get a bit outdated and will need an upgrade before the witcher 3. can i just get a better cpu and put it in or do i have to choose a specific one that fits my mobo? also should i get a realy good new graphics card and remove my old one or could i get a more average one and use them both to get the same performance?

Yes both will work for your system and you should be able to play witcher 3 with out AA enabled no problem.
