3dfx and Voodoo

I loved these guys, I had a Voodoo 3 for so long. It was an awsome card that never screwed up. I wish they were still around. Given the PCI cards they made and the AGP cards they mighta made they prolly coulda kicked the shit out of Nvidia and ATI.

Discuss.

Whoa there dude, don't go spouting before you have the hard earned facts. 3dfx was all about FPS, but in the end the people wanted Quality over Quantity.

Think about it tho. 3dfx was what? 4, 5 years ago? I was just thinking what you guys think 3dfx would be doing right now if they were still in buisness. In reality the Voodoo cards had all of the newest options and stuff. The company was just too small though and could not make new cards everytime a new feature was developed.

I remember when I just started playing PC games my dad always would buy Voodoo cards.

He always said they were the best out at the time, then we movied to Nvidea, then we hopped over to ATi which has been the best choice in awhile.

3dfx lost it's edge. nVidia was making better cards without requiring external power supplies, etc. They lost out because they couldn't offer more bang for the buck. The good news is that nvidia (I think) purchased almost all of 3dfx's technology after they went down the tubes. In it's heyday, 3dfx was king, but after the Voodoo 3, they had nothing.

They didn't evolve their tech any after voodoo 3. The cards they made after that was basically voodoo 3 cards whit more processors and ram.

They stagnated, so they died. Simple as that really. Sides that 3dfx spinning logo was annoying as hell hehe.

Are these the same voodoos form like 12-15 years ago or am i thinking of someone else. there was a card that was always on the supported list of sound and vid cards with the Sound Blasters and whatever back before they stopped making games for dos and switched to windows based(Windows 3.1).

History is certainly cyclical... 3dFX ruled the world... Does anyone remember the first time they turned Quake2 from software rendering to OpenGL? It was like moving from black and white to color!

Rendering schemes went from custom-made software rendering engines to Glide to OpenGL and now to DirectX.

Video cards went from Voodoo to nVidia and now there is a fierce battle between nVidia and ATI. Whats next, Bit Boy Oiy? (5 points to those who get the joke )

I had a 3dfx Voodoo 5 that I got for Christmas. Unfortunatly, I didn't know at the time that 3dfx was going out of business. It went out of business 2 months later.
