My guess from September was March that closed beta would start... that guess is looking less likely every day, but I still have hope. If it's in April I guess I'll be fine with that, but I hope it's not anytime after that...
The first rule of closed beta: You never talk about closed beta.

2 months of beta? that seems very short if you hear some of the plans.

Beta most likely won't start until the Sept/Oct timeframe..

Higby himself said that beta invites will start being sent out in the next few months. That can't mean anything else. It's clear as day. Beta will be under way within the next few months, not after a few months.

The state planetside 2 is currently in:
Alpha/internal beta

The state it will be in when priority access testers get in:
Closed beta

A state that might occur if they send out another limited amount of keys:
Closed beta

The state it will be in if anyone can download the client and test the game:
Open beta

It's not that difficult really. Closed or "priority" beta will likely be soon. Based on how that goes, open beta or more keys for the closed beta may happen shortly thereafter.

I was in PS1 beta way back in the day and a few other SOE beta's since. Typically Open beta is a month or so from launch.

April issue of PCG is usually out in March. I am hoping that they don't wait too long after PCG to get the beta started.

Sounds like TRay is a stickler for "Finished" though. Like, "We will not release anything until i am satisfied that it can't be better" at least from a visual standpoint.

Looking at the Alpha gameplay. It would appear that they are already ahead of some games release state!

I am happy.

I don't know about you guys, but I received my pc gamer last month. As did a bunch of my friends. so..... that kind of proves the op's theory false. I've also seen many games do this countdown to release with the whole revealing different units, vehicles, etc. and all of them released a beta before they were finished showing everything.

All (2) of the professional artists I've known have been like that.

Again, the beta we might get invited to is not a functional testing beta. It's a non-functional beta test, aka

"how much people can we cram into this area before it crashes?"
"how is the server stability when x amount of players are doing this?
"how is the QA working out whenever this occurs?"
"how is the players feeling weapon X is handling?"
"how is the environment working out in area Y?"

It will not be a test where they go:

"Player X said we should implement Y, let's do it!"
"Player X thought we need to remove Y, let's do it!"
"Player X wants to replace Z with Y, let's do it!"

non-functional testing usually doesn't take more than a month or two, seeing as half the job will already be done by their in-house QA team.

The things within that client will be the things we see in the release client, admittedly with a few adjustments due to player input should they be very unbalanced or blatantly not working. They will not be adding things, nor will they be removing things unless the vast majority of players give the same input.

actually they have said lots and lots of times they will use beta to add/remove/tweak/adjust ANY of the game mechanics according to player feedback.

to quote Tray: when beta comes, all bets are off
to quote higby : when it comes to beta, nothing is set in stone
and i'm sure theres more

and what is your source for this non-functional thing?

I do think some of that will happen. The devs have said so repeatedly.

Must feel pretty great to the devs that their fanbase wants the game so bad that they create multiple threads on seemingly a daily basis arguing about when the fucking beta is going to come out.

Well PCG mag came out Feb 28th, that alone to me seems that the beta would be sometime in march, or April. I don't know how stupid someone would have to be to hand out closed beta Keys Late February and then START sending CB keys to people in may. Especially mid may.

That doesn't make sense does it?

A quick google search says CB signups on Dec. 23, 2011.
Jan 23rd, Feb 23rd, March 23rd <-is already pushing it.
To be honest they should have just waited to allow CB signups instead of giving it to people 3-5 months early.
