Non-stationary waypoints (Waypoints on players / vehicles)


I fly a lot of aircraft and it's very hard to keep track of wingmates or liberators that need protection. As soon as the first fight starts you basically have no idea where your mates are.

My proposal comes from another game, Tribes. It allowed you to put markers on players / vehicles themselves. This made it a lot easier to track your mates even if they're miles away. Below are some pics that illustrate this feature. I think Planetside would definitely benefit from such a feature as it would make these awesome escort missions less frustrating.

Further additions, maybe unlocks with certs, would for example show even the health of the player / vehicle.

How does it work in tribes? Is the whole team tracked or just a few people you select? Because it becomes extremely easy to tell where enemies are if you know where the friendlies are disappearing.

You'll only track the people you selected. The waypoint would stay on the "dead" body until the player respawned, so yeah, you'd know where he got killed since the waypoint would disappear.

I think in the original game you could only track one person but for planetside it would be nice to be able to unlock more of these tracking waypoints with certs, similar to what we currently have with the squad leader unlocks.

I was a little surprised how little information PS2 gave us to work with compared to PS1. That said, waypoints get in the way enough as it is. I'd say we need a 'Focus' hud frame that shows us the same info that person sees about their status. Then you could set yourself up to escort properly or to interface with a wingman.

I can see something like this in the rotary menu when you hold Q over a friendly. Or you could maybe just make it an overall UI option for Friends or Outfit mates. Seeing some kind of indicator on your screen and minimap.
