I have a horrible feeling that Planetside 2 was little more than a project (and a gamble on the offchance that it's popular enough) to showcase the fundaments of forgelight before it gets put to serious use in EQ Next. I think a lot of planetsiders are going to look at the features available in EQN (bearing in mind that PS1 had more faces/voices for character customisation, which is still important, even in an mmofps) and feel ripped off.
EQ may be their flagship, but their inability to embrace enjoyable PVP made EQ2 a flop long term. There's no room in the market for another MMORPG, especially when SOE takes such pride in its family friendly games design approach in EQ, when evidence is that gamers are pulling in the other direction. It also will have to compete with TESO.

I dont even know where i need to start to facepalm here. If your feelings are always that off, then you should absolutly kiss the girl you hate the most. Voices are something that is apperently coming. Faces? Nobody gives a crap about faces. Nobody gave a crap about faces in PS1. Ignoring the blabla of EQ, random bollox really. But here comes the real gem. IT HAS TO COMPETE WITH THE ELDER SCROLLS ONLINE? BAHAHAHAHAHA TES O is already dead. It died the moment it got announced. The entire TES community said no to that game right away, given that it completly removes everything that makes TES TES, just for the sake of having a MMO in the universe. But the TES community doesnt give a crap about the IP, they care about the freedom. Obviously TES O wont have mod support, and a lot of the exploration, crafting and questing freedom of the SP TES games will go to crap. TES O will be the biggest flop in history, mark my words. No amount of advertising can compensate if you kick your core audience in the nuts. |

It made the same mistake Diablo III made. The online "MMO" function is nothing more than always-on DRM for a single player game with some basic social networking type shit to attempt to justify it. I'd rather play Morrowind.

I can see why that would be difficult for you.
Your face, your ass, what's the difference?
How do I know this? By the sale of helmets. Helmets which will always have to cover the face because of this design flaw. TESO has an audience, it has a fanbase from the get-go. If you've read anything about development of the game you'd know it's going to be yet another step in the right direction for MMOs, with all the rich lore of TES to draw on. TES is gritty at times, raw, like Game of Thrones. Everquest on the other hand is closer to the final scenes in LOTR with hobbits hugging to the sound of gayass music. TESO will inhabit a market similar to the state of GW2 today. It won't be a goliath, but it will be true enough to TES and innovatively designed enough to stand out from the crowd; and happily successful in a modest fashion at the least. EQ Next is a huge mistake. You thought you'd come in here and lay the smack down, but you've just made a tool of yourself. TES is MASSIVE, even the people who expect it to fail will be playing it.

I agree though that TESO is a RvR competitor much like GW2 is. But we'll see if it's a full-on competitor since I've read maps/regions will be instanced. |

So put in that context the time and money poured into PS2 was substantial, despite being in beta it was the star of the show last year at SOE live. As a EQ2 player myself I should feel more entitled to feel a bit raw about the resources poured into PS2 (which came from EQ1 and EQ2 and a bit of PS1), but I'm pragmatic I guess as they have to make the biggest bang for the buck.
As for EQNext its almost certain to not be anything like EQ1 or EQ2, I got to speak to David Georgeson at last years SOE Live about MMO's. He didn't give away any real secrets for EQNext but his enthusiasm is infectious and I can confirm he's just the same face to face as when on camera (I definitely recommend cornering him if you can at any SOE Live ). When I mentioned about the past few MMO's (KOTOR, Rift, etc) bombing because people had basically already played the same game so became bored of it fast he was definitely on the same page! I really don't know what he has going for EQNext, something sandboxy is what Smedley has hinted, but they also know that releasing something close to EQ1 and EQ2 will just canabilise players there, and run into the same problems that the current crop of "Me too" MMO's has run into. |
