Author Topic: PS damage - more like Tribes/Quake/Unreal, less like CS/BF1942?

I don't know if this is covered in the FAQ or not, haven't seen it. Anyway, a lot of people have been making comparisons between this and Counterstrike and sometimes BF1942. I would argue that these comparisons are misleading - I bet that the damage model (i.e. how many bullets you can take) will be a lot more like Tribes or even Unreal or Quake. This would mean that you can take a few bullets and still be all right - in other words, although acting like Rambo and going in with guns blazing might not be the best strategy, I bet you'll be able to get a lot of kills this way if you are skilled.
Why do I think this? For a few reasons:

1. Although this isn't Tribes 2, you can't ignore the background of the lead developer (Dave), so I'm betting there will be certain similarities in the gameplay, and nothing affects gameplay more than how quickly/easily you die.

2. Armour. In a game like BF1942, you don't have any armour. So a quick burst from a submachine gun and you're dead, because all that's standing between you and the bullets is a layer of cloth. In PS, you're going to have armour - how much you have depends on what class you choose. But I bet going in as medium (which should have decent mobility) will allow you to take quite a beating.

3. The lack of the ability to go prone. Why do you want to go prone in a game like BF1942? Obviously, because it's safer. But the devs have decided to forgo the ability to go prone in order to speed up gameplay. This says to me that being upright and running will be less dangerous than in a game where a couple of bullets will kill you. In other words, they are encouraging all-out assaults and sacrificing "safe", slow, realistic simulations of warfare.

4. The feel of the game. From the screenshots, the stories, and the setting of the game, I get a little bit more of the "arcade" feel that Tribes or even something like Unreal has. Instead of gritty, realistic graphics, they are cleaner and brighter than something like BF1942. I would argue that they are going for more of a fun approach than a realistic approach (not to say that BF1942 is realistic, but its damage model is certainly more realistic than Unreal's).

In summary - I bet that the damage model will be somwhere in between that of CS/BF1942 and Quake/Unreal - in other words, a lot like Tribes. This also means that being a Rambo won't necessarily be a bad thing, if you are a good enough player you will probably be able to get away with it. Obviously, going in by yourself will never be a good idea, but if you have buddies, an all-out charge could be quite successful.

Personally, I'd be very happy if this was the case - the more damage you can take, the longer you are fighting, and since fighting is where the fun is at, the more I'm doing that, the more fun I'm having.

That's a pretty fair and accurate assessment, Glaed. Although the balance has very little to do with my arrival and more with the fact that the Lead Designer (Kevin McCann) envisioned the game this way and set up the balance appropriately.

I wonder if crouching will be common rather than running while shoointg if we'll crouch fire, run, crouch, fire and so. Or if it'll just be mega rushes. Hope it's not just shooting rushes

You should go play DoD. That game is where I learned the art of Crouch rushing. I can run fire, but I almost always can be seen crouch firing, and if THAT is the key to PS.. I am gonna be a God.

Jut like BF1942. Crouch attack ois the way to go. The only way to get good kills and hit often. I hope it's the crouch attacks alot more.

I don't know. I have been playing CS and BF lately. I know exactly what you mean about the crouch shooting (crouch-fu?). I would guess that 80% of my kills in BF are when I am crouched. But in BF its almost always crouching or prone. In CS it depends on your weapon, which is kinda cool to me. I like the idea of using different tactics for different weapons, not just crouching automatically everytime you want to shoot. Crouching ALWAYS helps, no matter the gun, but some just allow you a little more room to move (MP5, MAC10..).

I dunno, I can't wait to play but I hope the gameplay doesn't just lent itself to 25 Vanu rushing head on into 25 NC on flat-ish terrain with a 30 second firefight leaving most dead. My worst fear is that this turns out to be a Quake 3/UT2003 on a larger scale but maybe something with a little (or a lot) of tactical influence with speedy gameplay.
