I think it's necessary to play as an Engineer when starting out. You need a level 4-5 Medic tool and the 400 cert rez grenades to be effective. In contrast, to be an effective engineer you just need a level 4-5 engineer tool. You'll get a lot of xp via reparing and delivering ammo. It worked well for me! You can put the certs towards any other class you want.
