What's our motivation?

If an enemy empire locks a continent, what's our motvation to take it back? Will we really gain anything from it, besides a base? Is the reward for locking a continent so great, that we would want to take it back or face an even stronger enemy? It kinda seems like a lost cause in the long run...

Didn't they say locking a continent would mess with warp gate routes because they don't all connect to each other and it's like a network of roads?

I don't expect to be rewarded, I just don't see the initiative. I know its fun, and it will be. I guess I'm just in an odd mood right now...

Edit : Hell, now that I think about it, there's never really a reason to play any game, it's just entertaining. I don't know why I was feeling depressed a few minutes ago, but it's gone now.

Yes this could happen, and its a reason to gank a continent. The reason to take it back is simple, its a challenge

Once you lock a continent a special menu pops up allowing you to open bars and nightclubs that you can party at. you can build beach shacks and hold a great big love fest. then all the peeps in your empire party hardy.

the other empires try to take it back because they don't like you having a good time. Bahhh!

Yeah, exactly! Personally goals like locking a continent or taking it back are just gravy on the real meat of the experience - the combat itself should be fun enough so that you really don't need any greater goal. Anyway, I'm hoping. Like B'42 for example, I'm not really bummed if my team doesn't win as long as there is entertaining action and situations during the round, and there usually is.

Amen to what everyone else has said. You try to take back a continent because it's an entire continent filled with your foes - hang any single-play game, now THAT's a challenge.

As a side note, am I the only one noting a lot of these "what purpose does x serve" messages recently? What are people looking for in PlanetSide, a sense of fulfillment?

Yeah, that's where I'll be... the snow continent. It sounds like it'll have lots of mountains but also some flat areas and not many trees. Just something about the snow draws me to it...

Even though there is not much motivation needed, people will want to lock continents and break locks: Does anyone know what the benefits are of locking a continent besides warp gate problems.

Yeah, that's the way I usually feel about it, but for some reason I was feeling down at the time of the post. Now I feel like kicking TR and NC ass again!
