I think the reason Notch is going with a monthly fee is because he realizes he does not have a steady source of income. Sure, he's worth millions, but he's only released one game. If he doesn't have a steady source of income, he can't make more games.

This is pretty ambitious, but I'm not convinced I'll pay a monthly fee for it.

It's monthly fees for the multiplayer part the single player will be free (after buying the game). Cant really expect them to burden the cost of running the servers and staff. This isnt BF3 where they will sell the game for $60 and with guaranteed sales of millions.

It looks really interesting, but I normally play games to get away from programming for a while. Can't wait to see what people come up with though, maybe someone will program Von Neumann Machines that end up taking over the galaxy

I can see people trying to create Skynet or some other rogue AI (HAL?) in the game, if that's actually possible.

Anyway, I'm more curious than really interested by the game right now.
