Wow. That's pretty much official then. No official date, but officially E3 or prior.

Nope, that doesnt automatically mean Beta, it could just be that you get some pcs set up at E3 for players with pre - created accounts for their alpha servers. Still, lets hope it is Beta.

E3 needs to be a big splash for SOE, not a few game journos running round empty bases. Guaranteed Beta will be up before then to be sure we can all log in etc. so that they're guaranteed several hundred of us running about like stoned chimps shooting each other up during Higby's next live demo.

Where is E3 being held, btw?

Think of it like the GDC demo, but with some computers where players can join the devs. Not quite the full blown beta, but a game that is playable for the E3 public. So basically, the alpha client and alpha servers being used, but for the first time with access for the public / E3 visitors. So where for a beta you have to have all the registration stuff ready and running, here you only get a precreated character/account or can use a temporary one. ( E3_visitor_PC_1, E3_visitor_PC_2, ... , YourTemporaryCharName1, YourTemporaryCharName2 )

Hope that is understandable. It is all speculation anyways.

I get what you are saying Wargrim, but the biggest problem I see with it is that at GDC, they were all company men (and women) who were all on the same page. They knew the limitations of the build and of their number of players, so they all worked together to have some decent sized fights in some pre determined areas.

If they let non SOE players at E3 get their hands on it, those players may want to go off script. The only solution I can see is either limiting where they can go and having as many SOE players as possible to make sure the limited locations are distracting enough that the E3 attendees don't mind or notice, or they will need a lot more players which would require beta to have started.

I too hope for beta for sure, but i think it would be possible to pull off, for example by limiting the spawn points so all visitors will run into the big fight by default. There are many factors i simply do not know, for example how big the booth will be, how many pcs will be available to visitors... Beta would certainly the better option, but if it is not ready in time for E3, i am pretty sure they will have a plan to let people play anyway.

Higby could "encourage" them to do some missions?
If beta starts pre-E3 then I would have thought it would be soon. Bug fixes will take time and SOE will want this 100%
